I do not think so, I seen some stream players that I surprised to play against have nicknames on mech but either as Enemy or Ally the nicknames don't show

Mech Nicknames will only become visible once the Solaris update comes life. Its unclear if it will be limited to just Solaris at this time, or be universal, statements for both seem to be floated by the Dev team.

No, you cannot currently see nicknames in-game. However, PGI is saying that this should be introduced as a feature for the Solaris game mode that is currently in development. They might bring it to the other game modes too, although there has been no confirmation on that as of yet.

currently nicknames are a good way to keep track of builds the mech has and what not. makes putting together a drop deck a bit faster if you have a lot of mechs (im in the 70-80 mech range myself.)

This.

...And whenever I decide to sell Mechs, I name similar variants that I want to keep with the ever catchy, "Don't Sell" moniker! :D

No, currently as people have said the names can only be seen by you unless you stream like Molten Metal. I wouldn't mind though as the only mechs I have named are ones I enjoy enough to spend MC to paint and have given cool-sounding monikers to.
