How you do you protect yourself when you browse websites then? Harmful code can be written into banner ads and other adverts.. Because in most cases a website will load an advert before the content of the website.. And not all sites know just what adverts are on their websites..
I use uBlock for my browser(s), adblock for youtube for videos I watch, and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware once a month... I haven't seen an Advert on any website in over 4 years.. Including popups and redirects...
Also StableBit Scanner is the best program for monitoring the health of your HDDs.. And can recover or flag bad sectors, and gives you temp and health warning before a HD failure..
Scripts in advertisements do not necessarily need your permission to execute any more than the rest of the scripts on the web page ask you first unless you have something like NoScript.
Just because it hasn't happened to you yet doesn't mean the capabilities don't exist >.>
you can use virus scanners that arent actual antivirus programs (if you preffer not to use one altho i dont recommend not using one) or even install a portable version of an antivirus on a usb stick and check and remove viruses that way, portable antiviruses are the best way to remove viruses as they check before windows even boots up and most run in a linux plaform and boot your computer into said linux platform and scan fix and remove viruses then after done allow windows to boot up.
reason i say portable antivirus are the best way is because they can take control of a antivirus if its not installed on the os, and like i said they scan before windows even has a chance to boot up which in turn doesnt allow any viruses to boot either.
there a ton of ways you can get viruses without doing what you think is how you get one, not only that they also let you know which sites have been reported to have alot of viruses when you browse the net, you can get what are called drive by viruses that are injected into downloads and even injected into windows updates while your downloading them.
i also use an awesome program called advanced systemcare, that scans for malware and a ton of other things (reg cleeaning, empty folders, hdd fixing ect...) including cleaning your pc keeping running like the day you bought it.
in general i use an antivirus and a portable one aswell, the os antivirus can and will block viruses and if you get one that the os antivirus cant remove or find, the portable one will surely pick said virus up and remove it :).
i have cleaned peoples computers through the internet with teamspeak and in person (the in person people i was able to do a better virus checking and cleaning due to being able to use a portable antivirus), most of them complained of slow computers, some were even thinking they needed new computers and after i cleaned them they were astounded how fast it was running, and all i did was run their antivirus if they had one if not i installed one and scanned then installed advanced systemcare and ran that then their computer ran like brand new (there are other things that can be done to speed up a pc aswell, for instance deleting temp files (temp files are something "almost" all people dont even know is a thing let aloine that they double and triple and never get deleted and browser history/cookies/ect, doing updates for the people who dont really know how to use a computer aside from browsing the net lol, actually opening said computer and cleaning the insides), for the worse off ones they get all mentioned along with sfc scanningand if their hard drive is to corrupt i can manually scan it with my laptop(s) (yes i have more than one :P) through usb data cords and cloners with the random few that wont show up in windows but linux will always find them, then i can remove and save what they need or even sometimes fix them, then point them to buy a new one and install that when they get it.
Ummm... Sure... even though you are quite wrong in that assumption.. Your computer reads and hence loads the HTTP code which if it's malware code written into the HTTP code of an advert banner ad, your system reads and loads that malware line code..
Here.. Perhaps this will enlighten you more on the issue...

I use uBlock for my web browsing protection.. it blocks everything from adverts down to cookies and trackers... It's a free web browser extension for firefox & chrome
Added together with Adblock for Youtube, i don't see any adverts on sites like youtube and gogoanime... No banner ads or adverts in the videos...
The only thing that Malwarebytes finds on my monthly scans are the .exe's & .dll's that have been cracked using a hex editor from a bootlegged game that I haven't whitelisted yet, which gets flagged as a possible threat..
As for your HDD... Stablebit does offer a 30 day free trial.. Which I highly recommend you use and run it on your system...

And it will inform you just how close to death your HDD is.. if it is indeed close to death.. It can recover and repair bad sectors.. and perma flag the ones that can't be so data isn't placed there..
A disk format can also recover bad sectors, unless there is physical damage..
But hey, i'm just a friendly fellow gamer that understands how to game and maintain his own rig, and sharing the things I know... You can do with this info what you wish...
I stopped using adblock years ago.. Only use the one for youtube to block video adverts... I also don't have antivirus activity running.. I just just run a monthly scan..
I run only 3 extensions with my browsers.. "uBLock", "Adblock for YT", and "HTTPS Everywhere"
But you do whatever you want.. It's your rig, and you are the one using it... Best of luck to ye...
I do the same thing, except rather than actual "Adblock" I edit the HOSTS file in windows to block all unwanted connection and stop any ads, especially the dangerous ones.
I threw my antivirus out the window after it kept deleting stuff I was trying to download that I knew was safe and when it kept trying to use up 100% of my CPU power for absolutely no reason in the middle of me doing things. Best choice I've ever made.
That's a bit tedious... betting that list of sites is rather long...
bunch of 127.0.0.1 <websites>
I used to do that before using uBlock
