It's pay to do things faster, not pay to win. No amount of money is going to make you good at the game, but it will help you get more stuff faster. There are some mechs that are only available for money (hero mechs) but even those aren't strictly better than the ones you can get for free.

Nope.. It is not... You can pay to skip the "grind" though.. but you have to first earn XP on a mech then use MC to convert it from it into GXP, which is used to unlock skills and/or weapon/mech modules... Buying mechs with real cash only either save you "grinding" C-bills or allows you to enjoy a mech before it later becomes available for everyone to buy by MC/C-Bill...

So a new player with zero hours played can buy every mech with daddy's CC, but will still need to play and get XP to unlock the skills.. C-bills can be bought with MC though, but are the worst way to waste MC...

The best thing the devs of this game have been doing throughout the years is making sure they are unquestionably non pay to win. Have fun, the first 25 matches gives you a huge amount of currency at a higher than normal rate, so don't spend it up too fast on buying mechs early and get a good feel of the trial mechs before you buy your own.

If you like 1st person Mech on Mech action... You will enjoy this game..

Here is some advice though..

#1. Don't let the fail players nor the rude ones discourage you from playing..
#2. Use http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/ for current hardpoints, quirks, and builds for ideas for mechs
#3. Read over the info from the content in the links at end of this post..
#4. Make sure you play your 1st 25 games in a trial mech solo, you get a huge bonus each game for your 1st 25 games, which you will use to buy your 1st mech(s)
#5. In terms of buying your 1st mech.. Using the trials will help you in picking which class best suits your playstyle,
I would watch this guide to help with you making a choice https://youtu.be/VT3hzjtgIms

It's not P2W, but objectively-speaking, if you fall somewhere in the bottom third of players in terms of skill, you will have moderate-to-considerable difficulty in progressing at a reasonable pace without buying premium time. It's a fun game, and you'll most likely have fun if tactical shooters appeal to you, but do be aware of this if you lean toward casual gameplay.

Well, with money you can convert Mech XP to General XP which is painfully slow otherwise, and those pilot skills would give you *some* advantage. It's certainly not pay-to-win but still players with money are more advantaged not taking into consideration C-bills accumulation.
But game is too grindy for my taste anyway, additionally i don't see the point in it, there's no tiers of mechs or something like that, so gameplay is seems pretty the same - repetitive.

That's only how i feel after enjoying World of Warships and Mechwarrior 2, your mileage may vary. Yeah, i guess i prefer more casual gameplay where i have more weight on the field alone and without voice chat and slower pace.

It's pay to avoid grinding.
First you have to grind C-Bills to buy a new Mech.
You can only modify and level up mechs you have buyed.
Than you have to grind XPs to unlock the Basic Level Feats of the Mech.
Without the Basic Feats unlocked your mech will react sluggish & slow, will heat up more and can't use his full firing arc.

To unlock the Elite & Master Level Feats you have to grind C-bills and XP for two other variants of that Mech. Completing all the Elite Feats improves firepower and speed and also boosts your Basic Feats.
Especially in Competitive Play and Faction Warfare a full leveled Mech is a must.

Premium Time (for real money or as reward during events or in loot boxes) give you a bonus on C-Bill and XP rewards.
During a good match you will earn between 100 000 and 200 000 C-Bills (without cadet bonus and premimum time) , the cheapest Mechs start at 1 300 000 C-Bills .But you also have to grind additional 2 000 000 C-Bills to replace the Single Heatsinks of that Mech with Double Heat Sinks, so it's more like 3 x 3 300 000 C-bills to bring one Mech to Master Level.

Converting Mech XP to General XP costs MC = real money, and you still have to grind the C-Bills to buy the 2 other variants. Generally converting XP is not worth the real money.

A Hero Mech for real Money gives a 30% C-Bill boost, Hero Mechs start at around 20$...
Loot Boxes (Supply Cache) contain sometimes Mechs, Premium Time, Keys for Supply Caches, Weapons,
You can unlock a supply cache for 15 MC, 1250 MC can be buyed fo $6,99.

If you like the game and:
don't want to spend money: grind and hope for rewards during events
don't mind to spend a little money: buy 1250 MC and unlock supply caches
want to spend 20$ or more: buy a Hero Mech for MC or a Mech Pack for $

This, but i would not buy 1250mc to buy keys for supply chaches its better when you invest that money into premium time.

If you are able to play each evening... premium time runs off even if you don't play, so for players who can't play very often premium time may not be the best investment...

Played this game before it hit steam. Have some heavy mechs on my name that took some time to get to. But even then I still like rolling a commando.

if you do have some money to spend, to start you off on a very good footing... you can buy yourself a c-bill boosting mech and premium time as the extra c-bills will add on to your 25 matches of cadet bonus.

It doesn't.

The first 25 matches give you cbills based on the achievement system that are entirely unaffected by premium time or hero mechs. You'll recieve a boost to the earnings from the matches themselves, but as a new player its unlikely it will be super high and its generally a bad idea to spend money early in a free to play game before finding if you like it much or not.

super high or not it still adds up, that and the game is free so spending a tiny bit would basically be like buying a cheap game and not hurting your pocket, well if you have money to begin with lol, im sure the person has watched vids and gotten a good amount of advise to figure if they are gonna like it, id would also assume most people know it wont be easy to learn how the game works right from the start (then again there are alot who think games should be winnable in like an hour lol).
