Why Arent The Old MW Games On Steam Yet?
Many old games have been brought back to life on steam. Why not the old mechwarrior games?

Legal issues drown the entire lot of them.

Not that it really matters, as most can be downloaded for free if you look in the right places (or bought fairly cheaply in disc form), and anything that would modify game performance (ie, much needed optimization, especially on MW3) means work for teams of developers that don't actually exist, and wouldn't be able to do much at any rate due to the aforementioned issues.

Unless you really want PGI to do that for you. Optimization, that is. :P

Earliest memory is Mechwarrior 2 merc, building my own stash of mechs. Anyone else?

Oh and playing MW4 Mercs on Zone net or something, knocking down assaults with LRMs. Good stuff.

GoG is where they need to go, so the team there can update mech 1-4 to get um working on modern systems. I own the disks, and haven't been able to get um to run in years. The latest is vid card incompatible issues. The game won't even start no matter what i've tried.

Only way to play um is on my legacy win 2k system, which at least works.

Mech commander 1 & 2 have less problems, but still can have issues.

Head on over to gog and put in the request.. maybe they will get the rights one day :)

wont run? sounds like win compatability issues, are you running win 7? win 7 has a compatability setting and a troubleshooter, if your running win 10 im not sure if it has the same but i would expect it did, or maybe a dx issue but if you have all older dx's installed it should be fine, runtime libraries could also be an issue and those can be downloaded an installed aswell, other than those 3 you would either get a rendering problem ( game would run but either not display or display but with gfx glitches ect..) or some type of errors (not enough memory altho with them being older i highly doubt this would be an issue).

best bet is to make sure the first 3 i mentioned are installed (dx or runtime libraries) or set (compatability) as these would be main issue of it not running at all, anything else would throw errors.

i personally havent had any games i couldnt run and play on any system ive had aside from trying to run a game more modern than the system itself, tbh the only game i do have on disk that i cant run would be baldersgate 2 but thats because of a redundancy error being thrown by the 3rd disk itself, if i downloaded or bought a digital of the original without any fixes ect.. i can say 100% i could get it to run, emulators will run dos games with ez and consoles can be run as well with emulators of said console.

I can confirm MW4 runs on win7

If you google around you can find it with the last mektek release installed and ready to go. Runs great.

I could run MW4 but I've never been able to run MW3 on windows 10, always got error after error, only solution I came accross was emulate w98 in VirtualBox. I wouldn't mind a Steam or GoG version tbh.

It took a couple hours of research and trial and error but I got the iso working with power iso. IT was not fun (the process, the game is tops) but the info is out there.

The VirtualBox solution already took me an awful lot of time to figure out, I'll try it again when I'll find the motivation.

MekTek had permission to re-release it. It is how the free copy that works with windows 7 even got finished in the first place.
Then IGP, before PGI, leased the rights to MW later and told MetKet they had to stop.
Do you think Microsoft with all their lawyers would have allowed MekTek to touch it if they had not asked first?

MekTek took it down after losing permission. A discussion thread that gives a quick version of the events -

Last time i tried was under win 7, i have since upgraded to win 10. There was a 32 bit error that i could not get around. But i have nothing better to do, maybe i can get it working under win 10 this time. and yea i did all the tricks with older software that i know. Nothing worked :(
