How to play?

I bought this game because it looks interesting, but even with a friend who plays Risk trying to explain, I have no idea how to play this game. I send an army of 5 units into 1 unit, and they all die and leave the 1 unit standing, whilst over times they wipe him out instantly.
The wiki is absolutely lackluster, explaining nothing about combat or moving. Can someone explain the way to play?

I see. So when my army attacks another, there is only a chance it will kill the units? And when there is no units, I notice you still lose one of your own units to capture the area. Is this subject to RNG as well?

Yes. There's actually still 1 army defending when a country looks empty. And when you capture a country, you must occupy it with at least 1 army, so plan for 1 to be used for that purposes.
