Attention! How to make the game look much better

You have to set the "Low Detail Models" option to "Four Player" to make the game look much better!

I got this game from the Sonic Hits Pack from the Humble Store and was disappointed about the graphics. It looked like the Wii version rendered in 1080p. Especially the water looked very bad.
After nearly a day of searching I found a post about the "Low Detail Models" option, decribing that the "off" setting makes the game look the worst and turns off many effects.

I know this is an old thread but i would just like to confirm that this does indeed work, and the difference is drastic. The game looks as good as 'Transformed' now. Better textures, more polygons, more geomatry, better shadows etc.

The text in that option is unbelievably badly worded, I've had the game for ages and only now am I playing it with full detail, thanks for the tip, the game looks great finally whilst playing with low detail on :p
