What do the "faces" and chants do?

I have tried a couple but not sure exactyl the effects on the surrounding ernemies. Also the auto-move forward is aggravating as I was not done exploring the graveyard. I killled a creature that completed the quest and so I missed the Zombie pit as I did not get to go back to it. Just saying! :)

Each face and chant has a different effect. Sometimes it buffs you, sometimes it hurts or debuffs enemies. Trial and error is the name of the game.
As for the auto progression, now that you know about it, you can plan around it on your follow up playthroughs.
