Vulture for Nethack makes accessible to the gaming public
one of the most original, challanging, and intriguing games
of all time.

Nethack was originally released in 1987 with ASCII
graphics. In it, the player must traverse scores of randomly
generated dungeon levels in order to locate the Amulet of
Yendor and return it to his Deity's altar on the Astral Plane.
The game is notoriously difficult and has an almost infinite
replay value. However, it's poor graphics and obscure interface
has kept it beneath many gamers' radar.

Vulture has changed nothing about Nethack but the graphics
and interface. The graphics are attractive and set a sort of
Dungeons and Dragons mood. The mouse-driven interface is smoothe
and intuitive, the drop-down menus are self-explanatory and helpful,
and the music, sound-effects, and occasional animations bring the
game to life.

Nethack is now more accessible to the new player, and only the
most die-hard fan of the old ACII graphics is likely to object
to the beautiful improvements that DarkArts Studios has made
to the way this game is played.

Vulture (once called Vultures Eye) is, simply put, a fancy skin for one of the most legendary games ever created, Nethack.

In my opinion, Nethack is the greatest of the second generation roguelikes, and the pinnacle of what it is to be a roguelike. Just a glance at the Nethack Wiki[nethackwiki.com] will show you just how complex this game is. And the random little reactions certain items have, the times you realize some random piece of junk can actually save your life... this is where Nethack really shines. Little things you pick up along the way (and through multiple runs) eventually make you a hardened, if not always successful adventurer. That lizard corpse you carry at all times, that sprig of wolfsbane, the bundle of unidentified wands, it all reminds you of the times you were less cautious, less knowledgeable of this world you are now a part of.

Vulture makes the game incredibly accessible for those with a bit of patience. If you have been at all enamored with any of the titles spawned from the recent resurgence of roguelike games, and are looking for something more substantial, I can wholeheartedly recommend this product.

(Of course, if you feel up to it, you can just dive in to the unaltered game for free. Though be prepared for ASCII.)

In what other game can you literally take your shoes off, throw them at a monster and kill it? Who throws a shoe? Honestly!

Vulture brings the quintessential Roguelike, Nethack to life with an updated user interface and graphics. Roguelike has been a heavily abused buzzword in the gaming industry for the past few years plus. "Hey, look! Something random happens in this game...it's a Roguelike!"
No...no it is not. Knock it off you.
That's not to say I don't play many of those games too but this game is more deserving than any other on Steam to be called a true Roguelike.

Vulture isn't perfect and still retains Nethack's learning curve for the uninitiated but more improvements are coming, including a massive update to the graphics, interface, music and more. There's also a fine line in Nethack in regards to the "spoilers." I would encourage players to try playing on Wizard Mode before reading the big book of Nethack spoilers.

P.S. You're gonna die...a lot.

I've played this game for nearly four years, on and off, before getting it on Steam when my harddrive died.
This game is not for the casual gamer, or anyone with high blood pressure.

You will laugh, you will cry, and more than anything, you will die a lot. In all of my time playing I've only ascended one time, and only with the help of bones files (random drops from previously slain characters) and thoroughly studying nethack wiki.

I have two tips:
One, start with melee heavy characters like knight, barbarian, or valkyrie. They are much easier to play, before you get used to the trickier classes like wizard and tourist.

And most important... don't get attached to your pets. Ever. It will lessen the pain.

When people talk about "Rogue-likes" this is the game that *almost* started it all. It's effectively the follow-on to the original ASCII "Rogue" game. It's pretty ancient. A good number of you probably weren't even born when NetHack came out.

This is an interface update to a game that's been around (and in almost constant development) since about 1987.

It was, then, a top-view text game, where a wall might have been expressed with a block: █ and your character was an @. The floors were all full-stops, and there were so many key-commands to do things that you just got lost.

Vulture for Nethack is a graphical update to the original game. It turns those ASCII characters into isometric graphics, and takes some of those awkward keypress commands and puts them into menus to make them easier to get at.

If you want some kind of comparison... this is the great, great, grand-daddy to games like Dungeons of Dredmor. It is far FAR more complex and involved. There are so many more things to do, discover, learn and... frankly, get killed by.

Vulture's graphics are certainly an improvement on the original Nethack (unless you're a purist) but they're not even close to as good as Dredmor's. There's no animation to speak of, appalling sound, and the isometric is a bit icky in narrow corridors - but the strength of this one is the game itself, and if you're a fan of the dungeon-exploration style game you'd be doing yourself a great dis-service not to get this one.

Nethack was also the first RPG i ever played, i must say, nothing on the Atari compared ever thereafter. Those ASCII graphics blew my mind o___0. This is the beast I played Nethack originally on, it probably weighed more than me.

Nethack got ported here to this engine Vulture on Steam, which is still quite limited in appearence, graphically it's on par with Ultima VII, but the gameplay speaks volumes. Sure the controls are a mess, and the hotkeys are strange to remember, again gameplay. Too many giggles featuring terrible cursed RNG and experimentation, quaffing potions, donning unidentified equipment or blind reading scrolls. There is some free DLC called Vulture for Slash'EM which adds some extra roles, monsters, items and areas. Eventually you'll love
hate that RNG so much you'l start talking about your YASD .

At first I was a tad miffed that the developer was selling this now. It for a long while was free, but then I realized that I have gotten almost a decade of enjoyment out of this version of nethack. So I say, you have earned your $3 from me and hopefully many more.

I liked this verison of Nethack 2 years ago, Now that it feels abandoned I give it a thumbs down.
The last update to be released had been over a year ago.
Adandoned project don't buy unless you are happy to get an old version of the game.

Some things I've learned the hard way, is the fact this version of nethack is buggy and a little glitched.
You will experience fatal errors that will result in a loss of a perfectly fine hero.

After a long long time of complete radio silence, this game got an update.

I will update this again if i don't see any new updates. There was some hints that this game was getting a graphical update, when or how? no idea.

Vulture for Nethack is a graphical overhaul of Nethack - essentially larger tiles on an isometric map.

I think anyone who likes RPGs should experience Nethack, and Vulture is the prettiest way to play it. Vulture still has quite a steep learning curve, so patience and a bit of reading will go a long way.

If you haven't played Nethack before getting Vulture first read the Nethack Guidebook ( http://www.nethack.org/v343/Guidebook.html ) to see if Nethack is something you're interested in.
Vulture replaces the sample screenshots in the Guidebook with static isometric tiles (as shown in the Steam store screenshots).
After you've taken the time to familarize yourself with many Nethack commands and been desensitized by frequent horrible death you'll find a game of surprising depth and challenge.

Graphics
Okay - The graphics are of Vulture are (as yet) modest (no animations, modest resolution), but still a big step up from the original ASCII nethack or 2D graphical tiles. I started laughing out loud the first time my wizard (Orcdalf) started hallucinating in game - something that's merely annoying when I'm playing the traditional 2D interface with small tiles seems appropriately ridiculous when playing in isometric Vulture.

My suggestion is to go into the interface options and drop wall opacity down to 0.4 or so, and also switch to "half height" walls. This helps to stop the isometric walls obscuring ground objects.

Sound
Poor - The music seems straight out of 1990s midi, and other token environmental and combat sounds are simple.

User interface
Poor - The UI is a work in progress (DarkArts are working on a GUI and graphical overhaul). As is it seems possible to perform most actions in the game with just a mouse - but it's usually much easier using the traditional (esoteric) Nethack keyboard commands.

I did find myself using the mouse menus more than I expected in my test run of Vulture - so they do come in handy (probably as much as the Windows or X versions of 2D Nethack).

Depth
About 50 levels :). Wikis are packed full of spoilers for Nethack or brave (and headstrong) adventurers can persist in discovering new (probably unpleasant) features on every play through..

Replayability
Awesome. With random dungeons and equipment giving a different experience every time, lots of class/race combinations, and "easter eggs" galore there's always something new in Nethack. Will you have to eat your dog on this adventure?

To make this game playable I had to download "Hack font" from Internet, then took out "Hack_regular.ttf" from package, and renamed it as "VeraSe.ttf" to replace the original font file (make copy of it to be sure!) in the Vulture Nethack Fonts dir. As Font Size cannot be changed in defaults.nh this will have to do.. More stars to be merry: ****.
