Vulture for NetHack

Vulture for NetHack

*** I lost my save game(s) after the update ***
There is a single update which changes the location of save games. This is a once off, in order to cater for future updates and multiple operating systems.

We're really sorry about this, but it was the only reasonable way to ensure sanity going forwards.

Restoring my previous saves & characters

  1. In your steam games list, right click on Vulture for NetHack
  2. Click on the last option "Properties"
  3. Select the "Local Files" tab
  4. Click "Browse Local Files"
  5. Select all files ending with ".NetHack-saved-game"
  6. Right click and select "Cut" (We're moving them)
  7. Go into the sub folder: saves\v1\windows\i386
  8. Paste the save games in there (Right click, select "Paste")
  9. Now rename all the files so they have no extension, no ".NetHack-saved-game" suffix, so for example if you had a saved game named "John-Bilbo.NetHack-saved-game" you will need to rename it, in the new folder, to "John-Bildo".

MIgrating bones files

This is almost identical to save games, however moved into the same "bones" folder structure as saves but without any file renaming.

  1. In your steam games list, right click on Vulture for NetHack
  2. Click on the last option "Properties"
  3. Select the "Local Files" tab
  4. Click "Browse Local Files"
  5. Select all files begining with "bon" (eg: "bonD0.4" etc)
  6. Right click and select "Cut" (We're moving them)
  7. Go into the sub folder: bones\v1\windows\i386
  8. Paste the bones there (Right click, select "Paste")

Should bones files be moved as well (to the corresponding bones\v1\windows\i386\ directory), or left where they are for now?

late edit: I wasn't so fortunate. Oh well, they'll be there for some future me, maybe.

Apologies, yes that's correct, I've updated the above instructions.

If you feel worried or uncomfortable copy them somewhere else first & make sure. It's not scumming if you've no ill intent & are just wanting to ensure you don't lose files ;)

    Thanks :-)
Considered simply copying them so I had bases covered. But if they didn't load when I got there, I'd still have been none the wiser :-)

The last two days of testing was exactly that, copying saves, bones, moving them, renaming them making sure that worked (On Linux as well as Windows). This particular change made me, personally, rather nervous, but it's definitely for the long term good.

I have two files in my directory which are not save files and on't seem to be bones files either. They begin with the character name and end in the extensions 0 and 1 respectively. Anything I should do with those?

Those are usually created "in-game" and are temporary files. It's odd that you're seeing these files if you're not busy with an actual game.

@SlashemVC: This may be the result of a crash and you've had Vulture on steam a long long time due to participating in the beta from the very start. These files could possibly be recovered if they're not a game you recognise or they seem old. If you don't really care simply delete them.

This sounds like you've opened the game manual instead of the game itself. I'd recommend restarting steam to ensure that the menu that pops up, after clicking "Play" is showing correctly for you. Steam should ask you if you want to view the manual, or play the game when you click the "Play" button. If it's not doing so then Steam itself has failed to sync the launch options correctly.
