If you click on the gamepad icon of the room, then click on the staff icon (the white icons) it tells you what kind of staff/skill each room needs.

For quality assurance (improve gameplay etc) it's game design and programming skills you need. So it needs both of these skills.

Goodluck.

Edit: Disregard the above, I misunderstood your question.

I think it's primarily Game Design. Note that there is a 'specialized' design room for each stat. The Graphics and Audio studios are self evident. However the Mo Cap studio adds programming, so I would guess the QA room adds gameplay. The programming stat in the QA room is primarily for bug fixing, I would guess.

I was wondering because I expected it to be gamedesign skill. But even though the staff working on gameplay improvements (and most of the staff in developing room) have 100 in game design, I can't get gameplay above 70ish. This made me wonder if Programming skill is needed for the improving gameplay too.

I assumed it would be Game Design for gameplay improvement and Programming for bug fixing.

If I may direct your attention here:

Someone else had the same problem: Everything geared towards gameplay, yet the review score still s*cked.

Perhaps you can gain some pointers from that discussion.

Because of the lack of info in my original post, I can understand why you are directing me there And I know about the other factors that weigh in.

But my question is clear.

What skill is needed for the gameplay improvements? Is it game design or programming, or a combination?

I know I have optimal settings (according to game report) and was working on a sequel. Im in year 2001, and most of my devs in developing and QA have 100 game design. My engine just had new improvements and it is state of the art when compared to competition.

So I just want to know, which skills are most important for gameplay improvements in QA? I have had 90%+ before in gameplay and this was all before they were fully trained and in other saves I had the same. All the time I thought it was just game design for adding gameplay improvements and now I begin to wonder.

I just want to be sure.

And you've got a perfectly correct answer for that. (see kaleraven's post)

I redirected you because of the following which was not connected to your original question.

Gameplay is a special stat: Only a truly perfect game, with less than 1 percentage points deductions can reach the 90+% review score.
