More specifically, there's a known issue with such adapters (that have no dance pad code) that basically make the pad unusable (I forget the specifics, but I think you can't hit two arrows at once due to some axis thing).
On another note, I'm using a PS2 Konami control board and with my custom pad, I have it wired to the actual buttons (O, X, Start, Select) instead of the arrows because of this problem. I can remap the keys without issue on Pulsen.
I can't be credited w/ the fix; someone else made it and emailed me about it. Since it was made in a newer version of the StepMania engine, I went ahead and pulled it into build/2.0 which uses that newer engine.
EDIT 2: When will build 2.0 be released for testing? Can't wait to try it out on my Dance mats (Although I've been also developing a way to hook up DInput to emulate the keypresses, I'd prefer using the builtin solution)
Some of the issues are that crashes when starting in Win8.1 unless you run in compatibility mode, pausing wasn't working (fixed this), selecting music screen is very low framerate and choppy when v-sync is on.
If you change some wires around on the board, you could probably fix it that way.
For instance, pressing Up and X at the same time is fine right? If so, try to jumper some buttons together or change where the wires are soldered.
