Theres a shop that lets you upgrade stuff and you unlock stuff
For now just Weapon Slots, Tome Slots, Toggler (Turn bought unlocks On/Off), Silver Gain (Useless after you got enough silver for all the unlocks for now at least)
In roguelite, you cannot upgrade anything between runs. That is why the genre is called "lite," not "like."

you got it backwards
I am not normally mean spirited nor cruel etc. But ... if I could ... I would make everyone who claims a game is roguelike or roguelite or anything rogueish at all be condemned to having to play the actual game rogue and ONLY the rogue game (no others) until they beat it.

The only similarity I see in most of these claims is a game where you start over when you die, all progress lost.

Yes, that is the mechanic defining the genre. Just like not all metroidvanias feature either whip slinging chads or arm cannon wielding babes but instead defined by using unlocked abilities to explore a large map that may encourage backtracking. The rogue genre is further divided into roguelike and roguelite, with roguelike having no meta progression that assists in the core gameplay.

To be fair the "upgrades" are more like core features that are just being gatekept from you. Weapon slots, tome slots, and the ability to toggle/banish/skip/reroll are not true "meta" upgrades and are commonly found even in true roguelikes as opposed to lites.

Honestly it should probably add an actual meta system since it has already identified as a lite, frankly given the games it clearly wants to be Vampire Survivors but 3d with RoR elements it really should have the basics like move speed, regen, damage, defense, and exp gain. Those are staples of the lite side of rogues because those things help combat inherently RNG heavy elements of which this game has a few too many.

-Like is the one where you do not have meta progression. You can have things like more items/characters/stages as unlocks in -likes but not things that innately increase your power before the run even starts. Roguelikes are perma-death, start over when you die. Roguelites are "you keep coming back stronger." This game is honestly neither category since it ♥♥♥♥♥foots around the metaprogression.

So no, he's right.
Skill issue all of you :steamfacepalm:
roguelikes have a strict, permanent "start over from scratch" system, while roguelites include persistent upgrades or unlocks that make subsequent runs easier.
