Story-wise, there is another tie off-world through Merrick and Johnathan -- Sheridan. I have ideas how of West could get off-world using Sheridan. This also opens opportunities into who "Zeronica" was working for and new potential antagonists (and allies). There's lots to work with here!
As for gameplay, I think you'll get a lot of people asking for some sort of multiplayer. You'll lose some horror elements when playing with another person, so it'd be best to not plan for another horror scenario. That, of course, depends on where you want the story to go. I think it would be interesting to see Dr. West in a stealth scenario, since it would be a nice change up from the horror/action of the first game.
There's other things you can do to expand on what people liked about Subterrain, though. Such as the whole base aspect: the base was a key part of gameplay, and upgrades were meaningful, but you couldn't change much about it. You'd put in a better chip and wait until the next one. I think it would be interesting to have a base that you upgraded and laid out around your preferences.
As a personal aside, I'd like to see three things:
1: More progression. Subterrain's progression was in the form of equipment and base upgrades. These are good, but more can be done. There needs to be more reasons to loot, items that can be used to upgrade existing weapons and armor, perhaps even skills, etc.
2: More variation in weapons and some improved/expanded combat mechanics.
3: A mech West can get into. It'd be cool. ;D
My other suggestion is more of something I like seeing in games, but might not fit this one, is the addition of human AI also trying to survive that the player could encounter. either in a rally the refugees style or avoid the bandits style. create new fear in areas by adding large camps of bandits that if alarmed would spell almost certain doom for the player. alternatively, you could create a feeling of community and safety in numbers (and strain on resources) by helping your fellow man in need. An extra hand, but also an extra mouth could create a decision on who and when you should take in. their could be decisions to make like feeding your people possibly contaminated food which would run the risk of compromising your base, or rationing out precious sealed food that could take away from your own survival in the future.
Finally, just because im a slave to aesthetic, I'd love to see any form of personalization just for the sake of letting me make my West just a tad different from someone elses West. This could go hand in hand with the co-op, making the team a ragtag pair of survivors instead of clones. Having home base be a player driven choice of design could give everyone a closer bond with their living space, and make replayability that much higher.
P.S. im still new to this game, i ironically started playing just barely 2 hours before this announcement so if these ideas are off mark because im not far enough into the game, I appologise. I could either be a fresh pair of eyes, or a noob who doesnt know better.
This is the best compromise. I think if it was fleshed out a bit, with some persistance in progression or something like that (unlock weapons, armor, etc from doing missions), you could get people to play for some time.
I really like the top-down, and I think with 3D assets tilting the top-down view a little bit would also look good. I wouldn't be against third-person over the shoulder, or first person, but there's not many top-down games these days. First-person or third-person would definitely change shooting up a lot, at least with aiming.
I will always dream of VR Subterrain, though.
