I also like the bashi babooks (or whatever the hand combat militia are called)
Fire and advance, square formation, good all around stats, and the best tactical flexibility of any unit in the game imo. All this "old guard" nonsense sounds silly. Only nubs rely on overbloated stats, since they need to compensate for poor tactical skill. Elite units have fewer men, and cost more to maintain, in campaign mode its the standard footsloggers that decide who wins/loses.
Also voltiguers are cool.
