The multiplayer campaign is not really designed for co-op, it's more suitable for vs. It's perfectly possible to play a campaign and co-operate with one another, but there are no specific co-op features like in Shogun 2. You can't share unit control, you can't watch a battle your partner plays (only two options are to auto-resolve or to have your partner take control of the enemy army, which is counterproductive for co-op), etc... The only time you can play a battle together is when you both have an army of your own, the rest of the time you'll either autobattle or take the AI's place to fight your own partner.
