Is there any logic to a battle map?
Reason I ask is that I stationed my army on the south side of a river bridge on the campaign map in case the French army in the city to the north of the river decided to attack, which they did.

Ok, I thought, so I have to defend the bridge and ford as the French need to cross the river to get to me. However when the map loaded up my army had the river at it's back and the French army held the heights to the north forcing me to try and scurry across the river before they got to me and then rush to sort out some kind of defence. It makes no sense at all.

I believe you must have been on the bridge on the Campaign map. When defending a river crossing you want to be just off the bridge on your own side of the river. The Battle Map setup in NTW is much saner and predictable than in ETW, which has vaguer rules and occasionally just silly.
