Cannons on a hill don't seem to work?

I have had good effect putting my canons in my line, but not on hills. When on hills they seem like they can't aim down and just shoot over their targets. This is not the AI hiding behind opposite hills, this is my cannons on a hill trying to shoot into a crest or valley but they seem to only shoot level and over the heads of the enemy.

cannons naturally aim high in this game no matter where they are placed (which was historically a problem faced in real life too). Order your cannons to target the area just in front of the enemy you want to target. Also, make sure your cannons are on the front slope of the hill, not the tippy top of the crest or the back slope. That will help too
