Im guessing you and your friend was fighting an ai faction yes?

You have to autoresolve every battle with the ai if the other player will not take part in the battle.
This is to prevent the other player just idling while you fight.

You can only fight battles against each other or if you both do coop against the enemy ai.

And how is that possible? There isn't exactly a Coop option...

Well if you make an alliance with your friend and both your armies attack the enemy then it will be a coop battle.

Wait, what? Yes, correct, there is no Co Op version of campaign. However, you and your buddy should be able to play every battle if you wanted to that involves at least one of you on the strategic map. If it were your force against an enemy, your bud would play as the enemy and vice versa. The only exception to that is if there are three forces involved and one of them is allied (AI or Human) to whomever (human player) is being attacked, that is the only time the two of you can play Co Op, or vice versa once again...an AI or human ally is being attacked and a human ally is within reinforcement range.

If it is the option is grayed out, then I would make the guess that when you started the campaign and went through the campaign options before launching, you checked the box to always 'auto-resolve battles'. I am pretty sure you can not uncheck that option and will have to start a new campaign with the correct option....'fight battles', which you can always auto resolve anyways if it is a cheapo battle.
I think this is complete bullshut. ♥♥♥♥ this system, the system where all battles are fightable is much better. It wont get boring since a player can give troops to the other player and this works much better. This system works both in Rome and Shogun 2.
