Although, it certainly takes more time to set up games, than in vanilla, and due to longer lasting battles, crashes will occur more frequently. The Lordz have also established a channel on discord to arrange games and communicate during battles, and there even exists a 'New Players' league' to help new players to get accquainted to NTW3 game mechanics (so not knowing the feel of vanilla isn't a disadvantage).
For SP battles NTW3 is less suited, because the AI is unable to make good use of the fog-of-war and its troups at the point the engagement starts most of the time already are exhausted and thus easy to rout.
If you are more into playing a campaign: The Campaign (of the Coalition) has been modded only for SP so far, but there are many more playable factions then in vanilla. There is an issues with launching the campaign atm, but an easy work-around can be found on their homepage: www.thelordz.org. There can also be found tips to help reduce lag/crashes. At present, some horse artillery seems randomly bugged, but I guess, there is going to be a patch soon.
Maybe, they are adding the Peninsular campaign next, as a lot of dedication has gone into fleshing out the expeditionary forces (French and British) and the Spanish unit roster, as well.
I would definetively recommend you play all campaigns in Vanilla (or directly download DarthMod), and only after you have done that you shall change to NTW3. NTW3 is awesome, but you will miss some content in you don't play all the campaigns before, and it might be too much a change. It is better you learn the basic mechanics before.
Don't get me wrong, you MUST play NTW3 at some point, but not as a starter.
This. People would like to believe that NTW3 is the hardcore mode.
