Can't Save Game
Hi. I recently transferred my old 'Vista' Steam file to Windows 10.
My Skyrim works fine, so does my Total War: Medieval 2...but, Napoleon's Save file doesn't work. The game, with Darthmod installed, works amazing except, I can't save anything.
I've removed game and re-installed it several times...problem persists...even re-downloaded game with original DVD-roms from 2010...problem persists... verified game cache, first had 3 missing, then 1, then normal...problem persists...I've tried with and without Darthmod...ditto, ♥♥♥♥ out of luck.
Is there anyone here that can help me? Please ! Sincerely, me.

I've not run NTW on windows 10 but given the age of the game you are probably running into a compatibility problem. I suggest that you try running the game in Windows Vista compatibility mode. But I don't use Win 10 so I can't tell you exactly how to do that. In Win 7 you right click on the exe and there is a compatibility tab.

Edit: you may also need to run it as Admin to overcome any permission issues with creating the saves.

Its seems a lot of people don't have issues with Windows 10. I've now dragged an old 'save games' file that was inside the 'Creative' doc. Still not working. I won't revert to Vista, thanks.
But there has to be a solution to this.

I don't have Win10, but I think you can run it in Win7 Compatability mode for the game. Your not reverting back to Win10, just running it in a Win 7 mode. I will try to check with my buddy who has Win10 and NTW and see what he has to say, he had problems as well. And also, Win10 has been trouble from the start with many games. A lot of people do have problems with Win10 and Total War games and many other games as well.

There are a lot of threads in pretty much all the Total War discussions on Steam and on the Total War forums themselves, that discuss the problems with running NTW and other TW games with Win10, check them out.

Thank 'Fast Johnny', I've basically wasted my entire weekend Google-ing and reading Forum tips. Nothing has worked so far. Your input could be very helpful. Thanks !

Hi Rickrock, can you check if a NTW script file is present (not empty) in
C \ users \ your name \ AppData \ Roaming \ the creative assembly \ NTW \ script.
thank you

Does it autosave the game? Everytime you click on 'end turn' on the campaign map, the game should auto save everything that you have done up to that point.

Hi 'Mesteur'...Yes, I transferred the Creative document back to that location. I also noticed that my appdata file was 'hidden'. I changed that. I also created a new folder 'save_games'.
Nowhere in my user script does 'save game' show up anywhere. Could that be part of the issue?

Hi 'Fast Johnny'...no, auto save is not working.

I'm going to test this now and see if it works

Thank you!

I had nearly given up on this game, because it never saved my campaign progress (either manually or auto-saves) but I did what you said and it is saving now.

I'm running into this problem in 2023 on windows 10. All the file paths, I don't have a file names appdata, or roaming, or the creative assembly, etc; basically that whole path stops at the username. I saw running in a compatability mode helped people, how does one enable this compatability mode? Is it for the whole system or just this game?

appdata is a hidden folder by default on windows. You have two ways around this. 1st method:
1. enable view hidden folders: Open File Explorer from the taskbar.

Select View > Options > Change folder and search options.

Select the View tab and, in Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives and OK.

option 2: press the windows key then type the following into the windows search bar:

%appdata%

This will immediately send you to the Roaming folder.
