Not everyone remembers Spain can place guerilla units anywhere on the map, including behind enemy lines, and losing all artillery pieces and the general in first seconds of the battle can cause a certain type of player to hit ragequit button.
What is everyone using online? I would rather use lancers online too.
My favourite faction ever is Netherlands so I might have a weak faction fetish, but I like Spain a lot. Their infantry is bad but cheap so you can add a good general and some chevrons, cav is good enough, weak art but I never rely on art, and on top of that guerillas allow for some funny tactics.
Experienced player will of course expect Spanish Inquisition guerillas, but still you can get your money's worth from them by hiding one or two guerilla cav units somewhere on the map. This forces enemy to constantly divide his attention and keep checking his rear, as well as keep some reserve to guard cannons and general staff.
They were very weak militarily ib this period. Their artillery was excellent, but their infantry was mediorce and their cavalry was terrible, only complete a charge on one occasion during the Battle of Talvera. Their Guerilla units were what caused the majority of the problens for the french in Spain, as well as the British armies and later the Portugese.
There are still alot of players that are not aware of spain s guerrilhas capacities as they dont have the DLC that adds them but they can decide battles on their own. Specially the cav units and as Brzęczyszczykiewicz said its a very effective trick that works on most players taking the highest level ones and DLC onwers, because in a very short time you can kill their general from the rear with several cav units heavily damaging their morale and giving time for you to position your main army on a vantage point.
So,if used properly they can gain victory rather early in a battle,or stall the enemy movement
at the start giving you a edge on positioning.however players that are aware of this type of units will deploy reserve units to the rear and protect key units such as art or lights and other tactics they see fit. also you can put experience on these units, and overall in the entire spanish army as their units are cheap, therefore increasing their fighting skills.
can be used with infantry very effectively
(CAN SHOOT MOUNTED GOOD MORALE AND ACCURACY)
You can place them beyond the normal deployment square, say behind the enemy deployment zone, cav on forests or behind their gen,inf on villages to take chokepoints or buildings etc until the main force arrives once the battle starts. quite effective i must say
