It kinda is the solution.
Not perfect, and not saying it's a great system, it certainly could do with improvements, but in the end, this is how army-movement works in TW campaigns:
Any given movement order, will follow the most direct, unobstructed, overland path toward their destination.
This means the army will always move if there is a path available, regardless how long the detour will be.
Holding the right mouse button is the tool to use if you want to see exactly what the exact path will be when you release the button.
So if the only path available shown to you is a 10-turn walkabout you'd rather not take, you have a chance to see that before you actually give the order and have the option to do something else.
It's kinda tedious when moving armies over long distances/multiple turns within friendly territory, but it's hardly a gamebreaker.
Has been just as long since I've touched Napoleon: TW.
I believe it was "Histwar: Les Grognards" you are asking about?
Not too sure, but I followed that game for ages before giving up on it due to a lack of updates sadly.
I'll look into it again sometime, perhaps it has seen some proper development time since then.
Good seeing you around!
Brilliant, thanks mate I'll write that down and have a look too. It looked a stunner of a game, I really hope it became something. Lucky really that I looked at your profile, I was trying to remember your name for a long time, to ask about that game, but it just wouldn't come to me. And Ha, I'm still a NTW nut, something like 4,000 hours if you add the offline play. So many good mods it just keeps giving pleasure...and good to see you around too
It looks like it is available in various forms, the standard version is about 45 Eurosbut you can buy various levels which offer allsorts of incentives. I am sorely tempted to plunge in with the standard version ? I'm having a think
Having a quick look: Isn't there a more expansive version now, as a new stand-alone game?
Reading a bit about "Histwar: Napoleon" at the moment, looks to be a successor to the Grognards game.
Will have to read a bit more to figure out how the games relate to eachother.
Hi mate, well you know I had a think and thought "why not give it a go" because I did love the look of the demo all those years ago, so I put some funds in Paypal just to be safe and purchased it. Fairly straight forward but then after installing it a registry box popped up and man did that cause me a headache, I even sent a message via the site for help registering it. The registry code was a mile long and I couldn't tell if the O were Os or zeros. Then after many attempts I tried the code from the purchase page instead of the one in the email verification which was easier to read and hey presto.
Ran the tutorail for an hour or so and then found an email from the guys saying allsorts about maybe corrupted download and old versions and the code only being for the Napoleon version. So after a few more emails I now know Yes is the answer to your question, the Histwar Napoleon is the latest version and basically replaces the Grognard version, which they say is not neccesary to install and also has a seperate registry key anyway. I'm going to have to sit through the tutorials a few more times before I attempt a large battle like Austerlitz, I got the jist of things but I'm sure there's a million things I've yet to understand. As for the look of the game, it seems much the same as it did when I tried the demo, nowehere near as polished as NTW and kind of reminded me of Scourge of War Waterloo in appearance but slightly more detailed and sounds better, with the cavalry bugles and marching drums. I like how they have tried to make the regts look authentic formation and composition wise too. When I figure it all out I may record some footage for You Tube, but that's a while off I think. Anyway I'm really glad I bumped into you yesterday because the game has been on my mind a long time and I'm pleased it got to a stage where it was a playable version, even if the price tag is a bit hefty and if I'd known some games and dlcs I've been waiting for ages on Steam would be on sale today maybe things would have been different, but it's here now and I'll make the most of it
Great find man, thanks for clearing that up!
Sorry if I'm unable to get back to you in chat btw; At work at the moment and my procrastination-levels are suffering due to actual workload lately :|
Anyway, all that sounds like a hassle! But glad you managed to get it downloaded and working.
Shame the developers seem to be unable to manage to offer straightforward way of actually buying the game, it really seems to have the potential to be one of THE digital wargames of choice for those of us looking for realistic strategic-level, full-scale battles.
Sounds like they could sell a whole lot more (and as such obtain more resources to develop the game further) if they made it easier for people to actually buy the bloody thing.
Had a quick look at some videos though, and I'm definetely interested in the latest iteration.
Should share it with the Lordz guys from the NTW3 mod; should be appealing to them too.
Would love to hear your opinion on the game when you have some more hours and a few big battles under your belt!
