NTW - Will not launch - WIN 10
Napoleon Total War(NTW).
NTW does not start. On steam it says running for maybe 2 seconds then fails to launch. I have a quite a well up to date system that has far more power than required to play this game. I have tried everything from completely re-installing the game (5 Times) and deleting all old files, running it different compatablities modes. Run as admin, also does not work. I have also tried fixing registry issues, via CCleaner. Moreover, I find that when I validate the game files, through Steam, It always says there is 1 file that will be recovered, I have validated it 7 times now and it keep saying the same.

Usually on steam, when you launch a game it does DirectX set-ups for that game, however, NTW does not reach that stage. I have predicted that something in that area might be the issue, however, I cant say for sure.

I have also noticed in the 'Napoleon' folder (this is the folder via going through the 'AppData' - 'Roaming' - 'The Creative Assembly') that there is only 2 folders the 'logs' and 'Scripts'. These 2 folders are completely empty, and I'm absolutely sure there should be more folders in them. Weather that's part of the issue, I don't know.

I will post my DXDIAG, if someone thinks they can help !

Please help me, I absolute love this game and have put hundreds of hours into it and I would love to keep playing it.

Hello guys,

I confirm that NTW works well with Windows 10. You don't need to change the game files, which is a risky operation. Try to update this file to the 2017 version: Microsoft visual C++ Redistributable. You can update from the Microsoft web site.

I remind you that in case of reinstallation of the whole game, you have to verify manually that all the files has been deleted.

Hope this will help you

Didn't work for me

Can't get mine to launch either. I've tried all the fixes i can find online aswell as reinstalling Steam, along with all my TW games

Medieval 2
Empire
Rome2
Shogun 2
Attilia
Thrones

All of the above games work perfect except for Napoleon it's the only one that will not launch. The launcher pop's up for a split second then nothing. I've allowed Napoleon through my Firewall but still nothing. I have the disc version btw from when the game first came out.

I've tried verifying game cache again and again but always says 1 file will be reaquired but never is also tried it as an admin and still nothing.

Can't understand how all the others are fine except this makes no sense to me.

Anyone get it to work ?

Did you?

Before playing Napoleon be sure your PC has just been turned on or rebooted. THEN click Steam to make sure it is fully loaded. Launch game now. Windows 10 and security software are not friendly to older TW titles. Startup exc appears to be the problem. Steam seems to help sort this out a bit. You'll notice when an older tw games stop working, (Nap, Empire, & Shogun) all stop working until you clear the exc problem which may happen often.

Because this is pretty important with just about any game, and I can't believe how many people never restart their computer.

The other thing that may exist- the .BLOAT file that this and Shogun 2 used to make when taking a memory dump. I used to have this big thread for fixing it, but basically do a search of your files in Windows Explorer for "bloat" and see if such a file turns up. If so, delete it. It is safe and will fix your game.

Edit: Forgot to add, as mentioned above, you have to manually remove all old NTW files before doing a clean install. You should also be able to delete the folder and then verify the game files to re-aquire the unmodified ones.

I've deleted all files i could find and removed them and tried reinstalling multiple times without success it still won't launch. I've never plaed Empire or Napoleon on this pc but Empire installed and works no problem it's just Napoleon. Shogun 2 works fine aswell never had a problem.

I've never downloaded mods for my games either so that's not a problem that some have had. I also deleted steam the other day and reinstalled all my games from scratch and they all work except for 1.

Did you search for a .BLOAT file and delete it?

One other thing is to use a program like C-Cleaner from Piriform to clean up your temporary files, then fix your registry errors. You may have to run the registry cleaner several times before you get all the errors out. That was another part of my old thread I remember back in the day.

Yeah i've been using CCleaner and clearing the registry altough not several times will try that again. No sign of .BLOAT files none that i can find at least.

I haven't played Shogun or Empire on this pc i only installed them to see if they would work which they do as i couldn't figure out why Napoleon wouldn't launch. It barely even register's on my Task Manager when i try to play it.

There doesn't seem to be an obvious reason why this does't work no errors or warnings it just seems to flatline after pressing play or useing the Napoleon.exe to try and start.

I'm about an hour off of getting NTW installed on my current rig. (Super slow farm internet.) I'll let you know if I encounter the issue.

Another thing could be running the program as administrator. Steam should always be run so, and if you haven't tried I'd right click and run as admin for NTW.

It may be a C++ issue or graphics card driver update. I'd make sure you have your GPU updated. If it's the C++, I should have the same issue on my end when I try to run it. I'll pinpoint which old version needs to be installed and let you know.

I have everthing updated including C++ and done the admin thing. I'm still installing a few old games including rome 1 and company of hero's all disc codes and all work.

I've tried the NTW disc code with steam and installed with the discs and always ends up the same. I'll keep trying and hopefully get lucky with it eventually.

I hope you have more luck. Thanks for the help btw.

Finished install and after forever (first time setup) it popped right up. Are you launching it from Steam or trying to use the Total War launcher like you would with the newer TW games? I didn't use the launcher.

I also noticed that if you alt+tab out, you cannot get back in. Try launching it through your GPU with the framerate synced and on fullscreen. Maybe it will work long enough for you to mess with the settings.

Congrats man. Yeah trying to launch it from steam or the desktop icon doesn't make a difference sadly. Did you buy from steam originally or do you have a retail copy.

I got it on Steam many years ago. Installed on three systems now. Are you using Mac or know how to post your DxDiag? I'm thinking it may just be a hardware thing.

Yall inspired me to try again. Had all the same issues when trying to play it a few months ago when I bought on sale. Will post an update on how it goes. *Crossing Fingers*
