A: you have a backup
B: if you use the patch after installation, you get a DRM free version and no need for the DVD's afterwards. As the game has no Steam achievements or trading cards, there is no point on having it on Steam.
C. if the game is not on the list of the retail games that can be activated on Steam, you can't activate it. You can add it through "Games" "Add a Non-Steam game to my library", but you will still need your DVD's.
D. if you want to get rid of your DVD's, you might want consider buying a new copy on Steam (on sales) or on Gamersgate (non-Steam, DRM - free, digital copy, also on sales). I still have my retail copy and the Steam copy, so i'm covered in any eventuality.
So make your choice and stick with it. Most of the old games need to be bought again if you want them on Steam.
I prefer to buy a DRM free copy where is possible, as those can be easily backed-up on your HDD or on DVD's and will work (most of the time) on newer OS. Steam might be convenient, but i buy games on Steam only if i can't get them otherwise (aka DRM free). Same goes for Origin and UPlay.
PS: most of the time is cheaper than getting it on Steam.
P.P.S: still hoping for Sega releasing the IP back to Obsidian and a sequel.
