Alpha Protocol

Alpha Protocol

Enable Controller Option not working.
I have a wired Xbox360 controller. It has worked fine with any game I have tried. However, in this game, when I try to enable the controller in the in-game options menu, the commands flicker at the bottom of the screen but the controller does not work, when I exit that screen the controller is not enabled, and when I go back to that options menu it still has the controller option disabled. Help please.

I'm having that exact problem with my Switch Pro controller. It took a great deal of work to get it to even acknowledge the controller in the first place, and then it started using my old (attempted) Steam Controller profile for some reason.

If you're using a Switch Pro controller for PC gaming, I highly recommend looking into the 8bitDo wireless USB adapter on amazon. It basically allows your PC(or Switch, MacOS, or Rasberry Pi) to use Xbox One, PS4, PS5 and Switch Pro controllers as generic Xinput gamepads. On PC, there's no need to mess around with Steam Controller profiles or anything as it's plug-in-play and just works out of the box with zero setup.

Using my 8bitDo, I had no issues with the game recognizing my Switch Pro controller. Sadly though, the Switch Pro controller doesn't work well with Alpha Protocol. The triggers aren't pressure sensitive, which is needed for lockpicking, so it's best to stick with an Xbox controller anyway.

All my Xbox controllers are wired... :,(

^ I had an 8bitdo controller for about a month and a half. That's how long it took to break from regular use. Their products are a complete waste of money. Planned obsolescence and nostalgia baiting are their only design priorities.

That said, you're right about the Switch Pro controller not being compatible with AP. After finally getting the old config out of the way I was able to play until the first lockpick minigame. Apparently the Switch Pro's triggers are designed to *look* analog, but they don't have that functionality.

Begs the question - is there any controller manufacturer on Earth that actually *wants* to sell a controller worth buying? One that has all the features it looks like it has? And lasts at least a few years?

Never tried an 8BitDo controller - thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to avoid those controllers. :)

I will say their USB bluetooth controller adapter I mentioned above works great, although it does feel flimsy. I never remove it from my PC though, so hopefully it'll last awhile. A friend who recommended it to me has had his for a year or so without issues.

The only non-official controller brand I found that make reliable, long-lasting controllers is ZD. Here are a few;

ZD-V - I've had an older model of this controller for 5 years now. The rubber grip on the sticks is worn now, but it's still my go-to for fighting games - love the D-Pad; same as Playstation. However, triggers aren't pressure sensitive.

ZD-T - I have two of these. One is 3 years old, the other 2. Both still work great. Triggers are pressure sensitive.

Both of the above are wired, but they make wireless bluetooth versions also.

Thanks. That second link is literally the exact thing I was looking for: a controller with at least X360-level functionality, at a reasonable price, that at least someone who's not a bot says will last a while. It's even wired, and as what's left of a competitive gamer, that's important to me. Wireless lag and a battery that could give out at any second like the rope holding the sword of Damocles aren't my idea of fun.

If my mind is ever recompiled back into my corpse the proper way, I'm going to make that a priority purchase. If not, my incapacity for real human experience will prevent every form of competition and fun I could otherwise have, controller or not, so there's nothing to lose in the bargain either way.

Glad I could help! You won't be disappointed. :)

I see the wireless version of the ZD-T is currently 43% off: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Wireless-Controller-Win7-Win10-Smartphone/dp/B085MYSLF4/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=ZD+controller&qid=1634511425&s=electronics&sr=1-7

My Switch Pro is my only currently working wireless controller. I love the look and feel of it but as great as it is, the triggers lack pressure sensitivity as we discussed before so I think I'm gonna jump on that before the sale ends! ^^

Edit:
btw....

Another controller brand to avoid: EasySMX. I pray whoever reads this never gives this company a dime. I brought one of their controllers and it was basically DOA - each stick had a different sensitivity, triggers felt weak and made squeaky sounds; the right trigger eventually broke after just a month or two. Started using it just for certain games and the face buttons started wearing out after a few more months. Last time I plugged it in it was just simply dead. Didn't work at all.

The same EasySMX controller I brought is on sale right now on amazon... It's kinda sad tbh...

Thanks for the tip - it's baffling how many companies premise their peripheral design philosophy on burning bridges with the customer the first chance they get, and every subsequent chance.

Speaking of great controllers, though, check out the ZIDLI gaming mouse https://www.amazon.com/EUKYMR-Backlit-Optical-Professional-Precision/dp/B0739Q3B2K/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1504661349&sr=1-1&keywords=controller . It's literally the best possible gaming mouse for its price, especially when paired with X-Mouse Button Control software (which is free). It's wired-only, but I've had mine for well over a year and haven't got a single thing to complain about. Every part of it works as well today as it did when it arrived. You wouldn't want to keep it in the same room as anyone sleeps, though, because its default setting is a bright rainbow pattern.

Nice! Sucks it's not in stock atm; I must say, I particularly like this part of the ZIDLI's description:
--Wide Compatibility: Compatible with most system including windows XP/Vista/Win7/Win8/Win10/ME/2000/Mac10.x, etc.

I rebuild old PCs as a hobby(certainly not an expert though), so a gaming mouse that is plug-n-play on ME/2000/XP/Vista is one that peaks my interest.

Side note: I'm actually about to slap together a Win98 machine soon for my brother using scrap parts from a Dell Dimension XPS D300 and an HP Pavilion a335w. Still need a PCI gfx card. Thought I had a spare one laying around but apparently not.

Your amazon links are cool and great and all, but if anyone actually has an answer to OP's question that would be appreciated

Make sure that you have Xbox Configuration Support checked under Steam controller settings and launch the game from big picture mode. Change the games controller configuration to "Gamepad". That worked for me.

Work fine for me with an xbox one controller. Other non Xinput controller like PS4, Switch is usually not support in older games.
