Can you set up a base somewhere else?
Hi guys.

I'm just wondering if there's any drawbacks with choosing another location on the map to set up shop rather than around your bunker. There's some fantastic spots elsewhere which would be far more suitable to building/defending than the one that's given to you at the start.
Or does the bunker tie in with the story later on? Don't want to go and waste a ton of time and resources.

Thanks!

Honestly i don't believe so. It seems like you can build a shack anywhere and as long as you have a secure building that the players can sleep in and other communities dont already own it, you should be able to live anywhere. As of if it ties with anything later on in the story i honeslty have no idea, i havnt gotten far. To not waste too many resourses try building near a hardware store, plenty of resources and little time to build. I had this same thought before but i had this idea

Alright, cheers pal, I'll give it a shot. I also just found a spot just north-west of Dejando, west of the bunker, that's got a large area fully enclosed by hills with two tiny entrances next to each other. Talk about perfect defensive spot with hardly any walls needed :D

That is a key thing to look out for also. the more natural walls you got surrounding your base the more protected you are form looters and packs of those damn infected.

I just started too and thought the same thing. I'd like to find a spot that had a fresh water source for growing crops (if that's even a viable food solution).

I haven't seen any bodies of water on the map, though you can build wells anywhere which give you as much water as you could ever want. Think you need a Construction skill of 4, or possibly 3 with a skillbook to build one. You can also plant corn, though I don't know how long the growing time is; I planted 13 corn and about 5 in-game days have passed and they're not ready yet.

It's three. Corn takes quite a while and then ye got to replant it. No from what I've played the bunker is only for the begining and you can build more bunkers (if you have the stuff) if needed

The "There's Too Many of Them Out There" achivement requires: Build fences all around your bunker, so that it is completely enclosed.

I'm guessing you need to build a fence around the original bunker to get it?

Beyond that, the spot north-west of Dejando along the road near all the wrecked cars is very nice. Pity it's not possible to use that V-8 interceptor police car, it looks like it's in good condition.

Ahhh, so THAT'S why I didn't get that achievement. I fortified the bunker, but I used the natural hills around it instead of making it fully fenced. Thanks for the info!

You should still get the achievement if you make use of the rocks. Are you sure there wasn't a gap in your fence somewhere? Email me the savegame if it seems not to be working.

What happens to the community if I start building elsewhere, like that nice canyon north west of Dejando? Is there away, or is it even necessary, to tell them not to sleep in the old bunker?

Actually, this is a case of my brain not quite performing properly. I'd been using the cheat mode on that save, so... yeah. For some reason 2+2 didn't equal 4 in my mind!
Really sorry about that ^_^

Oh right, at least it's not a bug.

You can build elsewhere, and they'll sleep in the nearest buildings (that belong to you) to where they are at the time.

Only thing you can't do is take over other buildings, like houses in the towns etc, to make them part of your community. It's been requested but I've never been sure how to implement it well, there'd have to be some kind of cost otherwise you'd just do it for every building.

Yeah after a few short playthroughs I'm wanting to build my base to the near west of the bunker. It's a smaller area but has 2 small openings facing south and is completely enclosed in natural rock. now I just gotta figure out how to find trustworthy survivors and not ex bandits. At least I know where to find 3 backpacks now too :)

One of the negatives to owning buildings in town would be those zombie hordes which spawn.

That said, I'd probably want to take over the gun store. Pre-made fence, all the ammunition already there. Secure building considering it lasted a full year without any defenders.

My suggestion though, ability to demolish (recycle) buildings to move them somewhere else. Like demolish the original bunker and move it to the valley. Or recycle those wire fences around the gun store. Or recycle the Dejando diner and put it in the middle of my community so my citizens can eat in style.

Is there some story twist where all bandits turn on you - that would be cool as I have 36 survivors and most of them are looters (many of them have pretty lame stats btw but some are like your starting guys with 5 stars where it matters)

Anyway dont tell me so I find out the hard way - Im at the moment starting with los ceros.
