The required ingredients include X-Matter and glowing ore. The matter can be gathered from the darkness spreaders in space and on the ground. It's easiest in space. Then you need to craft matter containers ( I think crafting level 20 was required for this).
The glowing ores can be gathered at the highlighted systems. Those aren't the only way to get it, just the closest. Glowing magnetite and glowing gold ore, if I remember correctly. They are pretty rare.
(Also looks like a glowing diamond is required. Haven't found a planet yet)
The drone will shoot out blue light and scan up and down. If it does find ore, it shoots out a purple beam, and you will see the block highlighted as a small white box filled with glowing purple dots. If it can't find anything in range, you'll get an onscreen message telling you if there's no ore in range.
The higher the tier of scanner on the drone, the more likely it is to find ore. At low tech levels, it will frequently tell you there's no ore in range. If it's really really really far away underground, it may be so small you can barely notice it. It helps to do it at night, and turn off your light.
As soon as you do find and mine ore, scan again. Sometimes there's another block very close to the player.
If you get attacked by anything, the highlight glowing ore target box disappears. Just scan again to hightlight it again.
