If you haven't already, look up Space Engineers 2, I think once it's out of EA it's gonna be a lot like what we wanted Empyrion to become. I'm really just waiting for survival to release on SE2 and was hoping this game might at least tie me over...
as the first responder to your OP said. there are 2 towns on the world where the Demo takes place. the one that is further away from you has ship building/repairing facilities.
i feel that Cubic Odyssey will be a far more enjoyable experience than Starmade sadly as it's community has really fallen off. but if you need an alternative to Empyrion GS, Starmade is fully playable right now. oh! but bring your own music. they dont have any.
