what is the purpose of building a base in this game

It is something that I did not understand in no mans sky and I do not understand it here either, one of the incentives of this game is exploring the different planets so I do not see any point in investing time in building a base for you, I see much more use in building everything in the ship

Well in No Man's sky basebuilding was added at a later stage after requests from players. Originally the game was aimed at a more nomadic approach. But a lot of players love to build big elaborate bases and having a place to call home rather than spending all their time on a freighter. Some spend hours upon hours finding just the right spot or spots to build a base. :)
I am thinking it's the same reason here unless ships can be destroyed (I haven't played far enough to know if they can be completely lost along with all the content). Then it would definitely be handy to have a safe base in which to store your valuables in between expeditions, so you don't lose everything, if your ship gets destroyed.

Yes i had read a post where somebodies ship was blown apart by a pirate ship. So just leaving it idling above a planet i would be worried about. Not sure if maybe this is something will run into higher Tier areas maybe. I usually just put a teleporter in the ship and teleport back and forth from my select mines i put teleporters in and bases. Im wondering if maybe you keep ugrading your ship it will become more liable to become a pirate magnet.

Can you have Mass storage in the ship?
My thought was you have a main base and warp gates so you can have a place of establishment to hoard all my blocks and resources.
I for one never drop anything and collect everything i find so i need about 80000 chests lol

This! lol I was planning for my ship to have the basic necessities for crafting and some storage, but also having a main base with room for all crafting stations AND of course a massive storage to accommodate my hoarding tendencies.

In your ship you would prob have to go to town and modify the ship extending it for extra room for upgraded chests. I actually was able to fit a bed in the front part of it.

I'm level 30 full gear and did the entire game with just 1 chest, 1 advanced crafting table and 1 furnace on my ship, whenever I needed a specific table I'd go on a space station and use it for free.

However, now that I'm trying to stack money to get bigger ships, bases help a ton. Whatever you'll do to get money it'll probably involve tons of ressources, you need somewhere to stash them.

I'm assuming that you can have multiple ships? That would be another reason for a base to set up a garage of sorts maybe. :D

So no to multiple ships? Or do they all just idle above the planet or get parked on space stations or something?

Edit: Too bad actually. Would be cool to be able to make a ship hanger to store multiple ships. :D

Bouying i get them for free by reparing them there are many of them floting in space i have 21 level and most of my ships was fund in space.

Ping in space and go to the signals, you can get ships for "free" (needs repairing, but way cheaper than buying).

I got "planet bane", a titan class ship that came pre-installed with tier 5 gear this way, based on prices of similar ships this would probably cost around 8-12m or more to buy.

The ship itself can store up to 8x45 items (360), you can then have up to 10 (most I've personally seen is 7) installations such as crafting tables, this also includes chests.
