Women are not exclusively visual creatures. By that, I mean that they don't just see some roided up jackass and fall in love. When they try to, depression rates increase dramatically.
But Steve, is there a real world application of this? Yes there is. Let's take one of my favorite places in the universe, Naked News. This program started December 1, 1999 as a five-minute extension of another program and by June of 2000, had its own web site. Men were put in as a separate show in 2001. When they ran numbers on both the female and male program, they found out the majority of people watching both shows were men. So they did the smart thing. They pushed off the program in August 2006 to a separate news page, called Naked News Daily Male and re-tooled it to be extremely gay-friendly.
To say it flopped was an understatement. The program lasted 14 months and was permanenty cancelled on October 31, 2007. The female program continues to this day.
The developers can tell you that doing a male-only version of Huniepop is a recipe to have them bleed red ink out their sphincters.
Fine, don't do a male-only version of Huniepop (even though I shall continue to dream about it). Make a DLC to the original game that can let you choose to date men or women. We already get the choice to play as a male or female nameless main character, hell I'm a straight girl and I play as a girl hitting on other women, so make the options as free to pick from as the one that starts the game.
There is a slight difference. When you start as a female, there is literally almost no change at all other than pronouns. The character is practically the same character as a woman as it is as a man. Making male characters would require new voice acting, new sprites, new animations and new pictures all around (not to mention having seen the picture of Kyu as a man was enough to make me want to throw up).
Men will forgive a lot of things as long as the woman is bangin'. Case in point: Audrey. Audrey has the worst attitude of anybody in this game yet there are a lot of people that think it's a conquest to get to sleep with her.
Now imagine Aaron, a male version of Audrey who whines and complains and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ all around. I guarantee you that virtually no women would ever even want to deal with him for five minutes because they'd call him an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. In ten minutes, the HUNKIE GUY would make her feel like that she could do better.
Another point: Jessie. Now to me, age gap isn't a huge thing, in fact, my ideal girlfriend will be at least 8 years younger than me, but there are morons on the regressive left that would call a male version of Jessie a creeper, whereas Jessie is called a "cougar", or as I like to call her, a "pedo".
Nikki wouldn't work as a male character. "Oh, I build rockets by day and gyrate my hips at night". It would be unrealistic af, because practically anyone with an IQ over burger meat definitely doesn't look like they would in HunkiePop. Matter of fact, statistically, most men who *do* look like that would rather be with other men than with women.
We seem to have a disconnect on Nikki as a male character. Nikki as a female character theoretically does work, because there are nerdy girls like her around. Also, nerdy guys are obviously a thing. But Hunkiepop doesn't have a realistic view of men in general. In fact, all of them look like gigantic piles of steroids without a shirt on, kinda like the disgusting creatures in Magic Mike/XXL and the guy from Twilight. There aren't ordinary looking men in the video. I know at least two girls in HuniePop only have B cup breasts and there are A cup women in HCS and they are likely in HP2.
Guys who are built like that the most interest they have in science is how long they can light a fart for, how they can stuff a smart kid into a locker, or how far they can lob a football. That's another character that is not viable. Tiffany. Tiffany works as a woman because everyone and I mean everyone wants to sleep with a cheerleader. But male cheerleaders do not have the same kind of prestige and a large percentage of them happen to be gay. The number is close to 59%, compared to 2-3% of female cheerleaders.
and I generally don't like men at all, like I mean at all, so I have no idea nor do I have an interest in figuring out who would actually make a viable male character.
This is false. Some of the guys with the highest grades in my chemistry classes were very athletic. My chemistry tutor in fact was on one of the sports teams.

My motto in general. Yes, it's true. I'm a guy and get easily repulsed by guys and their crap they pull.
Not so I've noticed. Honestly, the piles of roids in Hunkiepop that I've met in real life couldn't even figure out that April 31 isn't a real date and wouldn't be able to spell "Atom" given the A, T and M.
TL;DR: if you want HuniePot to lose tens of thousands of dollars in expenditures minus sales, have them make a male version.
Men are visual creatures. One reason we like this game so much is the visual appeal. About the only people that would forgive as many character flaws as you would have in a male version are gay men, which is nowhere near enough in sales to warrant a game like this. It would probably sell about $10,000 but need $40,000 to $50,000 just for full voice acting.

That is honestly something I can't argue with.
Good! Some badass!
Male HuniePop can work... if someone will put enough of efforts in it... another questions are budget and earnings from selling it (cause... don't know, it seems male players are more than female and games with female characters are more popular. Devs could make even version for... you know who... don't get me wrong - I don't hate them... unlike something else
'd been imaging male Audrey... more... way more rude:
... and so on ;) . Oh, yeah: Austin has a lot of muscles of course ;)
Maybe I've overdone with the conversations above? ...
I didn't mean that Austin some gangster criminal or something of course. You got the point.
