Austin, you're such an honest douche! Fangirls everywhere are gonna eat you up! (Someone please make a game or a fanfic where he and Audrey crossover)
I took a look at the male Kyu and didn't even find it remotely sexy or funny at all -- more repulsive. That looked more like something that a guy would wear at Pride.
I think therein lies the problem. What a man finds really pretty and what a woman finds pretty have a lot of parallels. Yes, there are some butch women who are hardcore lesbos, but that's a rare commodity. I have inadvertantly fallen for a couple of lesbians, but that was a separate issue. I have seen hetero women open up Playboy and admire the women inside.
As far as what men and women find attractive in men, it's two separate animals. Kyu's second look might work for gay men but a woman looking at that would probably laugh before he asks if her ex-boyfriend is willing to switch for a night.
Also, some of the personality types just don't work. Let me give you a couple of examples: Audrey would go from a stuck up ♥♥♥♥♥ (who many men would consider a challenge) to a bona fide ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (how many women would put up with a guy who turns around and complains about everything?), another personality type that might have a tough time working is Jessie. As a woman, she works as a "cougar", but as a guy, most of the liberals would call him a "creeper" (although I personally love younger women and don't consider it creepy unless you're just being a jerk in general).
so in a nutshell, no, it wouldn't work at all.
For any genderbending work, you'll have to change some aspects of the personality for the gender. Each one will be viewed differently, their qualities may be praised or frowned upon dependant on their gender and you can get away with more or less because of that factor as well. To build up upon what you're saying, i've analyzed a lot of these characters myself and considered how they would work if their genders were reversed (i'm a writer as well as a nerd who loves analyzing things).
So far, the only ones who can work as genderbends without having to re-write the entire character of their backstory are: Nikki, Beli, Lola, Aiko and Tiffany. If you wanna include the secret characters (who don't have much backstory save for Celeste whose implied to be an off-screen action hero), then you could genderbend them as well with no problems (though a cat boy might not be all too eye-catching unless you've read or watched Loveless).
Those i listed above wouldn't have much problem or complaints about their characters changing gender.
As for the remainders Jessie, Audrey, Kyanna and Kyu, there's going to be a little bit of difficulty.
Jessie got pregnant at 16 and needed money to raise a child after she dropped out of highschool (the rest of the details surrounding that can only be explored through fanfiction). She became a pornstar because the money was good and she grew to love the attention she got from it. THIS STORY CAN'T EXSIST IF THE GENDERS ARE REVERSED.
The reasons being 1. Men can't have babies; 2. If you get a girl knocked up at 16 or any age where she or the both of you are still in school, IT'S USUALLY THE MAN WHO LEAVES; 3. Mothers have custody of their children by default (it comes out of the mother after all, putting a father on the birth certificate is totally up to them and should there be a name on there, even if it's not the biological father is that child's father by law for the rest of that child's life, which can result in numerous child support fraud cases that rarely get resolved).
Jessie as we know her with that particular backstory can't work as a male. The only way this backstory would work if the genders were reversed is if the mother of the child died or didn't want the child and gave up custody, but that can be seen as a cheap move story-wise. You would have to modify the backstory to work for a male gaining custody of a child (say perhaps the mother was determined as an unfit guardian to the child by child services or something and her family didn't want to or couldn't take care of the baby). But that could also be seen as a bit of a stretch. There are ways of making teen-DAD stories work (even though we rarely see them), but in terms of Huniepop (which has very little story that's more in the details) I can't see a male Jessie working out in that respect..
The same could be said for a male Kyanna, the other pregnant teen of the game. She was abandoned by the father of her child and dropped out of hish school as well. So backstory wise male Kyanna wouldn't work out unless the mother just didn't want custody but couldn't have an abortion (based on my life experience most hispanic communites are against that due mostly to the religions in spanis-speaking countries including but not limited to Mexico, so i think that backstory for Male!Kyanna would work out more than with a male Jessie).
In terms of male!Jessie (let's call him James) personality wise, the flirty and sexually-free personality can still work. How girls would feel about James would depend on the girl's tastes (I know plenty of male players who aren't all that into Jessie, shocking i know). Male!Kyanna's personality would work out as well since she's very fitness based and trying to get her life back on track after having a kid so young.
But in general both in fiction and in real life, we tend to see teen mom stories as more triumphant that teen dad stories. Both exist, both have their struggles, but because it's usually men who leave (especially if the pregnancy was accidental, unwanted or if they're both teens), we've come to praise and witntess more teen mom AND single mom stories rather than the other way around.
And i totally agree on what you're saying about a male!Audrey/Austin.
The only thing i can say i like about him so far is that he had a decent character design and at least he's honest even though he's a douche. I'm not like many girls my age, i don't have female friends IRL because i can't relate to the majority of them and they seem to hate my guts for not liking what they like and going into debt over desinger labels like they do and probably will still keep doing. I don't see the appeal of guys like Edward OR Jacob OR Christian Grey who are all abusers and stalkers. And unless the character is written EXTREMELY WELL, I always avoid the token jerk in any dating sim. Audrey is one of those rare exceptions.
I have my personal headcannons as will everyone else, but i think those who love her beyond just her looks or the fact she's a tsundere will love her because it's the small details that tell you THIS CHARACTER IS JUST SLOWLY DYING AND HAS GOTTEN TO THIS POINT DUE TO UNDERSTANDABLE PAST TRAUMA AND BAD DECISIONS THEY CAN'T ESCAPE OR WILLINGLY DON'T WANT TO ESCAPE BECAUSE THEY THINK IT'LL LEAD TO SOMETHING MORE. THAT there is an example of a jerk character done EXTREMELY WELL.
And considering Huniepop doesn't have typical dating sim story elements to it, it takes someone extremely attentive to notice that she isn't acting that way to be the token tsundere or ♥♥♥♥♥♥ character, but she's like that because she's suffered and wants that escape. That backstory of course can work for any gender, but it's more sympathetic if it's the female version with that kind of backstory. A male version will just come off as 'oh great, another character we have to hear our girlfriends compare us to' because it's been so badly done in other media. So for Austin to work as a character to be as likeable as the female version (whose pretty much the Steam favorite), you'd have to make him just fall heels over head for the player and make him a little more softer and squishier as you get to know him and he CANNOT repeat CAN NOT EVER do or say anything terrible to the player character that would resemble abuse. WE'VE HAD ENOUGH OF CONFUSING ABUSE FOR LOVE, LET'S CHANGE THAT!
Nothing ever dies in Huniepop...
Even if you don't feed the girls for years when their food meter runs out; and they're nothing but skin and bone...
If they did make a "male Huniepop", it would need to have content in it that appeals to men, such as lesbian relationships, traps, crossdressing, etc.
I'VE UNSUBBED FROM THIS LIKE A HUNDRED TIMES AND I STILL RECEIVE MESSAGES
OH GOD
You'll be here forever.
