The explanation for Miss Clay (suddenly) living in an expensive house is that Mr. Pierce paid for that house, through some (illegal) funding construction. You'll detect that when you do some research as the main character, in your house.
The main character is a 15- or 16-year old girl (or boy), who can see in the mind of others, and who can see in nearby rooms. It does not make her an experienced top private investigator. Some things that are obvious to the player after you play the game a few time, will still not be obvious to the in-game character.
The only link between "detention" and "behaving strange" is when the main character gets hired for her second job (Carl/Carla). Then Jen will confirm (when you ask her) that she "started to think" after being in detention for about 10 times, and you can make the conclusion later, that Jen must be under a magic spell. But even at that point, it is not clear who or what is doing that to Jen (only that it must be connected to room 014 and Mr. Pierce/Ms. Clay).
