Cricket only melee weapon ?

I just found a shovel and I was wondering since I'm playing on Survivor if the shovel is better than the Cricket ?

And what weapons should I upgrade ?

The shovel has longer range, and there's a third melee weapon spiked bat that does more damage.

I always upgrade the pistol, since that weapon stays with you no matter what, but on survivor that point is moot. Just put them into the weapon you use most, I guess.
