This is true, the play style doesn't feel all that different aside from your LB ability (and Grimlock) and that some weapons like axes and hammers are limited to certain characters. I have only played Sideswipe and don't really have a reason to switch, except if I want to go dino all over the enemies.
However, I'd like to make two points on the subject of the loot system:
I personally think there's enough variety and, in fact, if their idea of variety is to throw something like Insecticons at us, I'd rather be fighting standard Decepticons all day.
That's perfectly reasonable. It doesn't feel cheap at all to me, I've already got a lot for my 40 and will be getting even more. Though if one goes into this expecting something like DMC, disappointment will be felt, as this is more like Demon's Souls turned into a full-on character action game. (As in: Focused almost entirely on dodge rolls with i-frames)
There are a few differences between vehicle attacks, and Grimlock is obviously different, and some characters have certain weapons restricted to them. But no, the differences aren't massive, the biggest variation comes from the weapons.
There really isn't much difference between the characters.
I think only Grimlock and Bumblebee have gameplay changing differences.
On the other hand I love seeing Optimus use his fists as well as the Axe.
The loot system doesn't hinder the game too much for me, although I hate it how the Ranking system more or less encourages grinding.
Once I beat all the modes my new mini game was to find all their iconic weapons in SS rank and max them out but unfortunately I got bored.
I dont know the history behind this game's development but I didnt even know about it until I saw it on the store page. Maybe it didnt get the marketing/budget because it's not tied to a Michael Bay movie? Well they dropped the ball cause old gamers like me got lots of disposable income and this game looking like it came right out of the cartoons, my wallet was open. Shame, really.
Nostalgia factor 10/10, but actual score 8/10. It needs more to come back to, and putting more time into each character would have gone a long way
