[Solved] Anyone else having problems killing the first boss (Mistress)?

Hello all,

I just gave up my sixth attempt to kill that damn mistress ... I'm able to destroy the first three tentacles without a problem - but then the last two remaining start to get unhittable :( I hit and hit and hit and hit and hit ... and they just don't take any damage.

Anyone else out there having this problem? Or am I missing something? It's quite frustrating ...

You can't do any damage until the tentacles are pointing down, what I did was back off till it turned down then went in to attack.

Just gotta wait till its drawn back and kinda folded down, then run up and hack away. I never really figured exactly WHAT makes them fold back but thats when they take the damage.

Oh great, thank you both! :D Your hints were perfect - I also don't know exactly what makes them fold back (I think it's first running towards the mistress and then draw back again), but they finally did it and I could kill her :D

It may be a slight glitch.

There is another boss, you have to make him hit something to progress the fight. I've beaten this game twice on normal mode in 2009. I'm now doing it on hard. I know how it works.
I fought him and everything went along fine. I died at a later stage in the fight and respawned. Then I had him hitting but without any effect. I reloaded. But still it didn't work.

I logged out of the game and later when I logged in again it all worked. So perhaps when you log in now it will work.

I have the same problem, trying again and again, doesn't work. I make her lose all her health, then she gets into the ground and reappear, does a smashing attack and the health is full again, but I can't hit her anymore no matter what I do.

It's either bugged or completely random, which sucks...

You are talking about Hector, right?
He starts swinging his axe harder when he's angry. To make him angry, destroy the urn containing the ashes of his parents (which he mentions in the cutscene before the fight).

I had been playing for a few hours straight when I first got to the Mistress. Did the first two stages of the fight, got to the Twilight World. I kept hacking away at the tentacles but nothing was ever happening. I backed away as far as I could, "died," got health back, tentacles were still impervious. Quit.

Loaded; second try: Got to the Twilight World, one tentacle was limp. Hacked away at it, health bar was reduced. Mistress burrowed into ground, one less tentacle to deal with when she resurfaced. Went after the bent tentacle; they just kept grabbing and throwing me to the side. Killed myself. Tentacles then reacted as they should - destroyed one of them. She burrows again; I go after the bent tentacle again. They are impervious again. Killing myself didn't fix it.

Loaded; third try: Same as second, except instead of them being impervious, Mistress just KEPT using her spitting attack. Tentacles never did anything after that.


Not sure I'll ever get through this game. First it was consistent crashes (fixed by running in compatibility mode for XP). Now it's inconsistent scripting of events; have to quit/load the game after every ten or thirty minutes - have to keep killing yourself in the hope that that will get the events occurring properly.

Really seems to be a great game... past all the bull[expletive] that prevents one from being able to play it.

First time the game crashed after I "killed" one of the tentacles; then the last one seems to be unhittable. There are things I loathe in games. 1. Timed puzzles that "stall" progress if I can't complete them. 2. "Bullet sponges." 3. Bosses that regenerate health when you knock them down halfway (Hillock, Path of Exile!). 4. Boss fights in general, especially if they suck, and this one sucked. I've better things to do so--uninstalled this one. Thankfully it was a freebie on GOG, now we know why...
