Avernum 2 changes whole screen resolution

Avernum 2 worked fine for a few hours, and then the whole screen on the laptop went black. I had to force quit out to windows. Something about loading the game forces the whole screen to reset to the lowest possible resolution. The screen is so oversized that I can't even navigate to settings or menus. I have Avernum set to ask me my preferred resolution each time the game opens, but that doesn't affect it. Each time it happens I have to go back into the laptop settings and reset the screen res again. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and restarted, and nothing changes. I love this game a whole lot, I would be very upset if it stopped working. Avernum 1 works fine, with no resolution issues at all.
