Lava Dome. Pipe smoking ?

How do I 'smoke a pipe between the eastern pillars' ?

It's a step in a scavenger hunt type quest to gain access to upper levels in the dome. I have a pipe but I cannot smoke it. What am I missing ?

It isn't miss them so much as I confused the pillars inside that you require with the pillars outside that you don't. I think it says eastern pillars where the ones you want are not really eastern on the map......
