shovels, trowels, and picks oh my,, what do i do with them???

I guess i missed something because i have no clue what to take and what to leave,, what to sell and not to,, shovels, picks, trowels, clay stones,, is there a purpose for them?

The rule of thumb is to take everything that has gold value. The rest has only very occasional use if any.

Most of it just cosmetic junk but there may be few fetch quests where you have to bring x number them to quest giver (Escape from the pit had at least ale, cheap wine, bags of meal, picks & shovels, iron bars, tongs and pliers(?), a bag of sugar and probably others I've forgotten). None of these quest are important or mandatory nor do they give big rewards compared to effort involved in gathering needed items in large quaqntities. Rule of thumb, as Twistor already mentioned, is to pick and sell anything of monetary value and just leave the rest.
