Well i just recently purchased river of time and ill have to say its very enjoyable! I have not played the orignal one yet, but would love to after i play through this one.

So far i am very pleased with river of time. Its nice to play a game that not alot of people seem to know about. There is fun to be had here.

So.....I vote River of time! Even though it is the only one i have played lol!

River of Time is a newer title and perhaps a bit more polished. Both are great games, though. (River of Time is a prequel, so you could say that in a way it also makes sense to play it first.)

The original has denser atmosphere. This one is larger and gives a little bit more freedom.
Both are great, I'd start with the first

Both are great and can be played in either order.

I'd say River of Time is the slightly better game but I like the companions in the first game more. Also you get a much bigger stable to choose from. In River of Time you are really stuck with the default party for the most part. But minor quibble at best.

I would say River of time, is a better polished, is the prequel so in historical order it comes first.

Considering the story is told by one of your party members, I guess it's a must at least him be there almost all the time. (Like in the Dragon Age 2).

River of Time is the prequel to Drakensang, so if you eventually play both, Drakensang will have a little bit more texture because you'll recognize places and characters that show up in River of Time. River of Time is a slightly more developed game, however. But you will most certainly want to play both.

The character that you play in the two games are different, but when playing Drakensang you'll meet several people from River of Time a score of years later and get to notice how much (or little) they've aged. And when you play Drakensang you'll visit several places that were mentioned in River of Time if you were paying close attention.

I've spent a lot of time playing the Drakensang games, but not the Steam versions, so there are a lot of mechanical particulars I can't comment on (like exactly what the version number is). The game system is a modified version of the DSA/TDE system. I wish it were a bit closer to the origional system (I hate seeing characters grow their health back in combat), but a mod that corrected the major departures would unbalance the system and make some of the nastier fights (and there are a few really nasty fights in both games) essentially unwinnable. Taken at face value the game's modification of the DSA/TDE system works, and the game developer's portrayal of Aventurian villages and towns is unrivalled.

The River of Time seems more polished. One of the problems in the first drakensang was the magic system. It didn't work well. It was actually more melee based, especially towards the end when you get a golden armor. Finished the game myself with a pirate after first trying a mage (and then failing at blood mountains ruins when meeting gamblack). Still, the first Drakensang ain't bad. It got interesting locations and companions, as well as quests. Both are actually great, if you like partybased games that is. Actually you can say that the Drakensang games are the true successors of Baldur's Gate (and not dragon age), despite that they use other rules.

I'd say go with ROT first. The game is more polished and has better gameplay.
In the original the game sometimes feel much harder as there is no taunt abilities and larger fight is much more fluent to handle in ROT.

The Drakensang games are way too underrated! ROT is a very fine RPG and the original is pretty good too!

I felt like River of Time played more fluently, but the original had more content. Both are well worth their price on steam.

Ok, i have played The River of Time for a while now, but have to say that the first Drakensang is better. Especially when it comes to companions and the whole partybased gameplay the river of time fails. In the whole game you only have a few companions and for a large part it's just you and either fayris or jaakon (one of two dies soon in the beginning). The other available ones; ardo, forgrimm and cano, only join after some time (ardo even joins for a small part) Sometimes there are temporary companions, such as that janah in the tutorial (the campsite), but they are just temporary. In the first Drakensang you started in avestrue and already run into your first one (rhulana the amazon) and as the game progressed you got more. Also some companions got then an own quest. TRoT feels more like an action game and not as a partybased game. Yes, the magic is improved, it's less melee based and a nice thing is that you can return to places that are already visited (except the campsite, but that's just a tutorial)
But radon labs nerfed where Drakensang was all about: a partybased rpg. It ain't much partybased anymore.
