the read only error is because steam is not running as admin.

Hm, not sure. I found this in another steam thread. Tried all of them!

Windows Troubleshooting Steps

After each step, please re-test the issue.
1.Exit and restart Steam
2.Update All Drivers - including DirectX, PhysX, and Visual C++ as found at the bottom of the guide
3.Exit Steam and rename the ClientRegistry.blob and restart Steam
4.Exit Steam and delete everything under the Steam installation directory except Steam.exe, the ClientRegistryOld.blob, and the \SteamApps folder - this will force Steam to update when you log in
5.Complete the Verifying GCF Cache Files process to repair your game cache files.
6.This error may be caused by having certain Steam files set to Read Only. To resolve this: Exit Steam.
Navigate to the directory where you have installed Steam. (Typically C:\Program Files\ or C:\Program Files\Valve\.)
Right-click on the Steam folder.
Select Properties.
Check the Read-Only checkbox and press Apply.
Uncheck the Read-Only checkbox and press Apply.

7.If this issue is only happening on a third party non-Valve game, please try launching the game's .exe directly from its installation folder: C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\<Game Title>. You may also try other .exe's such as Launcher.exe in the game folder to see if a different error message is found.
8.If the issue persists, it may be caused by a network configuration issue. Please complete the Troubleshooting Network Connectivity guide to further assess the problem.

Did you download RoT & PS at the same time? Steam trys to merge these game together when you do that, corrupts everything. Download RoT First, start it up, make sure it works. Exit out, Download PS, then from that point use PS to start the game.

yep he did just that and he said he still gets nebula errors

I finally had to remove both versions of the game from my computer, ask Steam for a credit (they gave it, surpised me). A month later I bought the DVD version on Amazon for sale for 5 bucks. It did the same exact thing: crashes with runtime error and nebula error. This happened no matter what fix I tried. I think it has to do with win7 updates. When I first got this computer, Drakensang 1 ran just fine. After 2 years of continual patches from Micrsoft, the games won't play - so something internally has changed in win 7.

Got this game from Steam and on initially starting the game I got the XACT error for the amb_a1_dungeon.xsb file in export/audio subdirectory. I found a fix (delete the file) but then the game crashed frequently and I would get a XACT Error about XACT Engine_E_InvalidVariable Index. I finally found a fix in a forum thread that said if you purchase RoT and the expansion Phileasson's Secret (as I did) Steam installs it incorrectly. I deleted both RoT and Phileasson's Secret and deleted the appcache under Steam. I rebooted and installed RoT first and then the expansion. Game works perfectly for me now.

No matter what I do I cannot get this to run on my computer anymore. The curious thing is the first Drakensang ran fine when I first got this computer (win 7). Then I stopped playing it for about a year and after many windows updates, the game won't run anymore - same problem every time, a run time error and a Neblua error. Weird. I guess I'll hang on to the disks and maybe someday if I get a new computer...

Bumping this up, folks seem incapable of searching.

I'm having the same runtime error and Nebula 3 error but I don't own the DLC and I've tried the uninstall/reinstall thing several times and the -windowed run command but nothing seems to be working

Are you using win7 or win 8? Because the game appears incompatible with them now. When I first had win 7 (no online updates) a few years ago, these games ran fine. Something in a windows update may have made the game unplayble. It's weird.

sooner or later, the game will be patched to run on the newer systems.

No disrespect intended, but I seriously doubt they will bother to update the game for a new windows versions. It's just not that important to them, sadly. We just lost money on this one. Hope everyone got it on sale!

The game runs just fine on windows 8 and 8.1 for me. The issue comes from a persistant incompability dx issue that can only be solved by having the problematic files inside the game folder and copied as a mirror then added to steam as a non steam game. The issue is everytime you install a new game on to the pc that updates the dx drivers the game will stop working. Also use audio at 43hz setup in stereo only.

I don't know if that is the only problem Damedus. Reason I say that is I went to Amazon and bought all three games there on one DVD, not just from steam. Still had the same runtime errors and nebula error. So it isn't just steam incompatability, it might be win 7 issue, with updates. I wish it worked for me. It did in the beginning when I was offline and had a clean, brand new version of original win7. Tried it again a year later after nearly 90 WINDOWS updates and the errors were present.

i think the best way is to use a virtual os with a free xp image that has the just the os and the game installed on it. Game works and no risk of update or the sort but takes more space than it should and has a small impact on performance on old machines
