Now if you click on the spell you can open up the info box for it and it'll say what attributes / skills the spell uses (like INT or DEX or WIS) and that'll point you towards which to raise.
You'll always need to add to STR and CON in order to increase your VI (health) and which ever to increase your AE (spell point pool).
If you go to the weapons page you'll see what the stock weapons strength is (I'm guessing staffs), which might not be bad, but I'd push fencing weapons and wood shield to go with the Leather Armor. That's my norm for magic users as there's no impact on them. I think swords work also in not effecting spell casting, but unless you can get your strength up you lose some of the benefits from them.
For spells I've always just used the Light spell, Cure Poison, Heal and for damage 'Thunderblast(?) as it does direct damage.
If you go to GameBanshee.com they have a good RoT walkthrough that covers spells, classes etc.... in addition to the actual walk through.
