THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2: Remake

THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2: Remake

Disappointed Letter from a disappointed Fan trying to cope hard. 12 gb for a sloppy demo when the original release on pc was 525 mb of cringe masterpiece
Main Issues

- Performance issues on a pc that can play most games on ultra settings 60fps, literraly freezed the video from the iconic intro the first time and never again.

- Voice actors sound bored or forced.

- Loading Screens dont shake or move in 3D like they used to in the first game´s remake

- Game´s gore effects and dismemberment are awful and empty.

- Music is quiet af, even if I choose the original soundtrack.

- the bullets have no animation when shot in the hud, quite the opposite from what was seen in thod remake and the trailer for thod 2 remake.

- James looks weird with the soul patch, the original artwork had a shadow, not a soul patch

- Glad theres an original mode but has the original soundtrack "item select" instead of a new rendition (nitpicky)

- characters in general lack any sign of distress or life. for example: last civilian to save in first chapter doesnt seem scared or anything and the scare from the zombie out of the alley is predictable and boring. he LITERALLY walks towards the woman.

- Also, when getting a life pack from a civilian, they just give you a floating item instead of handing it.

- This game was my top priority in my wishlist, and my gf knew how hyped I was for this game and wanted to give it to me, wtf do I do now lmao

- 12 GB for a sloppy :JackRE4: demo, when the pc port was 525 MB of voice acting cringe masterpiece.

Back in 2019, I heard about the making of the house of the dead 1 and 2 remakes, I was hyped.. my favorite on rail shooters getting a new code of paint! after witnessing remakes such as re2 remake, I was at least hyped for the new soundtrack.

Years later, 2022 greeted us with the house of the dead remake, it didnt had the original soundtrack, but at least it tried to make an effort by adding achievments, new physics and such. I bought it on disccount despite the bad reviews and for a low quality game, it felt really nice. Getting to see the achievements on display in game on an old desk, feeling the atmosphere and a copycat soundtrack that tried its best to feel like "tragedy"

I beat it, got all achievements and despite some issues, I really loved it.

When the news about thod 2 remake and trailer dropped, I was hyped af...
my first on rail shooter was The House of the dead 2, back when I was only 5 years old.
Then at the age of 12 I got it for the pc, a weird looking port from empire that I still play to this day with some tweaking. To celebrate the launch of the original, I played the whole game in both arcade and original mode, beat all bosses in every difficulty on boss mode, getting every training course (even the one where you shoot the zombie in the car) etc.

I hear the ost of that game every now and then, both the arcade version, and the improved original mode version, which makes "muddy" even better imo.

Soooo
Imagine my surprise when the house of the dead 2 remake demo drops out of nowhere, installed it, tried it and the beginning cutscene started to slowdown a bit unsynced with the music.
I started the menu which looked kinda weird with the different types of menus for each mode but held my breath.
Once I chose james (which looked weird af with the soul patch and the plastic model)
I started the game, being greeted to the original mode "item select" theme from the original and the back of the car. I found it to be a nice addition to sign a form for the guns.
After starting, the voice actors sounded weird, a bit forced and others bored to be in this game.
The lack of taste and atmosphere is awful. Zombies disappear immediately like the original but no pool of blood or nothing. The music is VERY quite and not intense.

Amy and Harry were the worse of the bunch, bored voice actors and awful animations.
We didnt even get a proper training mode menu or boss mode meny with james and gary pointing out at us with that awesome music. maybe its gonna be there in the full game after selecting start.

I really hope this is just the switch version on pc, not the full release.

This remake lacks the charm of the original and even lacks the charm of the first game´s remake.
no style nor substance.

Seeing both side-by-side makes things even worse. I'm not the crazy one that are always saying old versions are better than remasters/remakes with way better graphics, but in this case, the old version really looks SO MUCH BETTER even with the low resolution image, assets and low poly models.

Also, look how they even changed stuff, the game is not 1:1 with the original. In the remake, there are breakable items missing, camera angles changes(and for worse), animations, some cutscenes lenghts, and even some characters are drastically changed, like in 2:21 where the kid is now AN ADULT. LOL

I don't get how this game managed to be way worse than the first remake, which I actually like, despite some issues here and there. The first one have pretty cool graphics, with greatly detailed levels, enemies are well modelled, and the gameplay is pretty much the same of the original. This new remake has nothing good. Oh, to be fair: The first boss model and animations are extremely well made. It looks like he doesn't even belong to this game. lol
I'm so angry at Sega for letting this exist.

I agree with pretty much everything you mention.

I'd also like to add that the new models for enemies are also very underwhelming, especially the Johnny, David and Ebitan models.

I can only hope for a mod that allows us to use the old character voices, these new ones are just plain bad, and badly forced.

It is commendable that they included the original mode however, that was a nice surprise.

Before I forget, it seems that if you play in any language other than English, your cutscenes will lag and stutter.

My biggest issue is the lack of light gun support but the dialog sounds like they used ai instead of voice actors to save money.
I tottaly agree with you... I was highly expecting this game. My first rail-shooter was THOTD, seeing fantastic remakes on the market, I had high hopes for this one.
I wanna think this isn't the final release, 'cause if it was I wouldn't buy it.

Please, fix the whole game, delay it 1 year or more if it necessary, but DO NOT release it in this awful state.
