THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2: Remake

THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2: Remake

First boss is mechanically broken
This is making me feel like I'm going insane but has anyone else noticed the first boss doesn't actually work properly relative to the original? It's supposed to be the case that when you hit the weak spot (the bat), the boss takes a large step back but it doesn't actually seem to work in this version of the game, or at least the step back is so small it's basically pointless. Chariot in the first remake has the same problem so I'm kinda amazed they've bungled this twice.

Secondly, the bat himself pops up for an extremely brief interval when the big guy enters attacking range and then immediately ducks back down again, which is just. not how it works in the original? He hangs around for a bit to give you a last ditch chance to avoid damage. Here it's pretty much the only way to score a hit and the window is insanely brief.

The second phase especially the bat starts already halfway in your face and zips around in a figure eight instead of starting very far away and alternating flight patterns?

this isn't even an attempt to replicate the original's mechanics? It's like if someone trying to remember it described it to someone else and then they tried to implement it and also weren't very good at it.

Not an amazing first impression for a demo to include a boss that doesn't work properly lol

No, this is the way Judgement is supposed to work in the remake. The boss is now more difficult and can no longer be cheesed by simply shooting blind over where Kuarl's head would be waiting for Zeal to stay in place until you hit him. The bosses in the first THOTD remake were all adjusted in terms of difficulty as well, most niticeably the Chariot was faster and deadlier, meanwhile the Hangedman was easier and less of a pain in the butt.

i find it wat too easy than the original game, the bat in the original move more faster than this one. regardless that the cutscenes of this game are completaly broken it is locked in 2 fps

In the original you could just shoot in one place or aim like a madman hoping Zeal would get hit, it was extremely unintuitive. It's not about making the game harder, it's about making a more balanced experience.

this is tautological. yes it works this way in the remake because that's what I'm describing. it doesn't work this way in the original and this new version sucks, it fundamentally breaks the boss fight's design because you can no longer push back the boss intended to be pushed back.

please refrain from posting if you have not played the original thanks

If you expect a 1:1 carbon copy of the original, there are plenty of ways to emulate it on PC (even different versions of it like the Dreamcast or the Wii versions that the remake takes the arrange mode from). And you could always go visit the arcades and play it the "way it was intended" if you please, it might need a little trip but it's certainly worth it.

I don't know who the hell gave this bossfight a thumbs up and said "yeah, this is good", have they even played the classic HotD2 at all?

Zeal is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too fast, and he even clips through Kuarl when he moves about.

Phase 2 is Hardly any better, Zeal is just immediately up in your face, causing you to lose health to absolute cheap shots you can't immediately react to.

It's just going to be another half-assed attempt at cashing in on nostalgia isn't it?

EDIT : i just played through the demo again, the fight starts ok, but after shooting Zeal 3-4 times it gets absolutely ridiculous. and when Kuarl dies, he attacks before the camera even properly adjusts to the fight.

I played the original once again just to check how much the fight has changed and Zeal definitely appears to be slower in phase one, only the moment he commands Kaurl to attack has been shortened (it way too easy to exploit it in the original).

In phase two I found it way easier to shoot him consinstently and avoid damage than in the original.

Yeah, I'm glad I'm not going crazy seeing this. I had noticed how quickly Zeal ducked behind Kuarl in the trailer and thought "Oh no this is Remake Chariot all over again." Not surprised it was still like that in the demo.

I appreciate the work the small team put in to the two remakes, but gameplay wise, 1 wasn't quite polished as I hoped it would be. And I REALLY hoped it would be more polished considering I'm so down bad for HotD1 that I've set up sinden LGs just to play it. I wished for a worthy successor, from the perspective of easy accessibility. I understand and accept that's what the remake of 1 was, but I'm ultimately disappointed that 2 seems to following suit in that regard. At least with 2, I can just throw it on my wiiU. 1 is legitimately lost outside emulation and the 2 ports it got the prior century. But that's SEGAs conundrum to figure out.
It's different. Not any harder. 🤷‍♂️

different doesn't mean broken aand i'd say this version isn't that bad judging by how dead the rail shooter genre is
