Am I missing something?
Just tried the demo and couldn’t get past how cringe the first 5 minutes were.

Like in that first cinematic where the father brings a “surprise” for his daughter? A sleeping boy that he found?! Like what the hell. Who wrote this? And the English voice acting is so bad. Does it get better? I thought this was supposed to be a legendary JRPG :(

EDIT: Please disregard my post. I have now put in over 90 hours into this game and started on the 2nd one. They are now my favourite JRPGs ever. Love the story and characters. Please give it a chance despite initial impressions.

Well, its claimed to be one of the best JRPGs out there for a reason.

You gotta play it all to understand.
if this is serious question - yes, give it time
I just can’t get over the fact that he just found a random child and brought him home as if he found a puppy. I can’t suspend my disbelief, I’m sorry
it'll be answered after some time, but I think it'll just bore you before that came. if you can't even suspend your disbelief at this time.
Welcome to JRPG cringe^^

They explain it later in the game.
The boy was found heavily injured, no? He couldn't just leave him there.

Dude, you don't even wait for the game to explain what happened and already complains about the writing. You're complaining about the very first scene

Seriously, reading/listening your opinion about videogames must be painful.

yeah and Estella assults him while injured, and we're supposed to like her?
Yes, it is strange and weird to bring home a wounded child without any explanations. Even 11-year old Estelle thinks so.

In storytelling, this is known as a "hook." The mystery is supposed to entice the audience to want to find out more. Hooks which explain everything in the first five minutes aren't doing their job as a hook.

This game has a very leisurely pace to its storytelling. If you're impatient for answers in the first five minutes, the pace of the rest of the story might drive you mad. This game might not be for you.
So many people complaining about the voice acting, nearly every character is voiced by the same actor who has played them since the original Tales in the Sky (and through all the following ones). Also if you looked at the resumes of the leads they've been in nearly every RPG/JRPG released the last 20 years. And probably all of your favorite Anime if you're into that.
I would agree the writing is a bit hammy, the overall quality has improved dramatically for the series in the last 20 years.
>play 5 minutes
>this is so bad, does it ever get better?
Literally the opening scene and you're complaining. You just wanted a reason to complain, didn't you?

It's "Trails in the Sky".
TBF it is creepy af to bring a 11 y/o boy home, refer to him as a gift for his daughter and then say "Isn't he a good looking boy" but perhaps that is a translation issue
