Can't pass Mushroom Mines (thing that shoots fireballs)

I can't get through the Mushroom Mines. There's an enemy that looks like a round metal furnace with spikes. There's a skinny gnome on top and it shoots fireballs. I can't deal any damage to it. I've watched a video walkthrough and the player knocked one of it's own fireballs back at it to kill it. I've tried this (over and over) with no success. When I knock it back it kills all the other enemies around it but deals no damage to the thing that shoots them. I've tried knocking it back by blocking, attacking the fireball, and using the butterfly sword. Doesn't seem to make any difference. (I'm playing with 3 players: Hedgie, Gunborg, and Seagurd)

Any help is appreciated.

Hi, you should try and throw something (barrels, smaller enemies or the knights own bombs) at the head. Let me know if you can't solve it!

Thanks for the reply. It's not the knight. It's this guy: http://i65.tinypic.com/35hlll0.png I've tried everything I can think of to damage it, but it doesn't ever take any damange.

Oh! I played that level right now and it should work. Just make sure that you block right before you get hit by the projectile then you'll deflect it. I have no idea of why it wouldn't work..
