The Rat Baby and the Furnace
Great game, loving it so far.

but the two main pieces of balance feedback I have are:

The Rat party member is far far too weak for the amount of investment and sacrifice he takes to get. Either he is a joke character, which does not feel good, or I'm missing something entirely. Level 10 and he still feels useless. If he's meant to be a joke character, please make him viable.

The Furnace, for a boss with such buildup, is very underwhelming. The fight itself is fine, but for a boss that is essentially locked behind a mini sidequest, and requires killing a merchant, the fact that you get nothing from it except XP is very disappointing. Even the NPC who tells you about it (boiler mutant guy) doesn't react if you kill it. Please give it a unique drop or at least something.

Can't comment about the rat since I haven't used him myself but I couldn't agree more about the furnace. It really needs to give a unique drop or have some other impact on the building considering how it's one of the few bosses you actually have to put in some effort to even get to fight
The boiler should explode and leave a smoldering crater that you can climb down to open a new area.

The games 'end game dungeon' with randomly generated areas with elite enemies and rare items every 5 dungeons cleared. Exiting the current dungeon brings you straight back out and you must start at floor 1 when you enter again.

A good way to farm exp and level new teammates and get some good items.

Clearing level 20 rewards you with the epic item 'Godlike Butter Knife' it does 999 attack but has a 95% to miss as it's covered in butter and you drop it a lot.

the rat has pathetically low HP and damage, at level 10 his max HP is still only like 70
his only special move is 'bite', which also does pathetic damage but seems to have a chance to do a very high level bleed

I agree on rat baby, one of the most time consuming party members to fully get and even then they don't really do much.

my rat is pretty capable tho, you basically make your left arm a party member rather than sacrificing it. Just give it guns, start the combat with nitro boost and the rat defending.
Of course its not as great as Hellen or Palpideu but its definitively more useful than Joel for me.
I always bring hellen, sophie and the rat and its a very strong team. Sam spams nitro boost and hurt me plenty, hellen does the dps, sophie applies status effects and the rat shots and uses items.
Rat is defo a balistics kind of character, never try to use it as a melee
Its low HP may be a hassle but it also makes it a character you can easily heal with food, which isnt really worth it for your main characters or other adults like Hellen or Palpideu. Also, if you have nitro boost or other evasion buffs, and have rat defending and sophie hiding during a turn, enemies have a 50% chance of basically do no damage. Its also pretty fast which is useful when it has to be the item mule, and will end many though fights fast with some bullets before the enemies attack or your main DPS guys use the mana thing (SP?)

I would 100% sacrifice my left arm again

The Rat appears to simply be a joke character, yes. He has flexibility in weapon equipping, but so do most other party members you can recruit.

I was expecting him to have some sort of secret Magikarp Power, but I think I got him to at least Level 12 or 14 and he didn’t do anything notable.

His main role is to facilitate character interactions in the apartment. He does not seem to be a useful party member at this time.
