How does Morton's fidget mechanic even work?

I recruited Morton, and they have the Fidget skill that pulls up a random trinket. But I can't tell what you do with it afterwards... It's not in their Special menu, it's not in the Item menu, it doesn't seem to affect the attacks... What's the rub?

Basically, when you first unlock morton, if you go to his equipment skill, you will see in his body slot he has something called "other arms" (or extra arms, something like that) with the description that they need something to grab and fidget with. When you use the fidget skill he will gain a random junk item to equip in his body armor slot, there a bunch of them and each one boosts a specific stat.
