Which arm to lose?
I dont plan on using the rat, but I want to save that little bastard anyways. I'm building Sam to be the team buffer, so do I want to lose the melee slot or ranged slot? Planning on using Joel (incredible melee dps), Helen and the Janny once I get them.

I usually save melee for the main character since it's more sustainable without worrying about ammo. Guns are super good against late game encounters though, but I usually just have my other party members use them.
i gave ranged arm but i'm still able to equip most ranged items anyway witouth being able to equip melee

The problem with keeping the ranged hand is that most good guns are two handed. You're gonna be stuck with handguns and whatever other one handed guns there are, so no shotgun, rifle (I think) etc.

The game is bugged, so you always lose the ranged one

I have not lost my range arm when I selected melee.

Kinda sad there isn't an Evil Dead type achievement considering you lose your arm, can get a chainsaw and a shotgun.
I'd personally say your ranged arm is better to give up for your first playthrough, your options are more abundant and other party members can utilize your guns while you use Sam's turn to dump your inventory on the head of any real threat.

With a bit of game knowledge to help manage resources, a ranged only Sam is still very effective.

Lose ranged, the rat can actually use ranged itself very well

lose range for sure, since its took turn to reload.
Seems bugged, I can use a rifle even though I gave up my ranged arm
