Takes me a while to kill anything and it all has so much health, is this a later game thing?

They do have a bit of HP but the big thing is that they are all crazy weak against turpentine. Search the apartment for turpentine kill what enemies you can and the first Fred will give you some turpentine

The more powerful acid bombs you can craft absolutely obliterate everything in there as well.
