How do you reload guns with detachable magazines?
Please help, how do you reload the detachable magazines? The instructions given in the tutorial was that I should press X to remove the magazine, and then press R to insert a new one. But I only had the one magazine that seems to have disappeared from the game when I removed it from the gun.

I'm not entirely sure if the magazines should be able to disappear if you remove them with X. They definitely do if you quick reload with R (sometimes, it's either that or dropping to the ground). But that can only happen if you already have at least one spare.

But if you really did lose your magazine, then there is no way to load the gun (unless it's the Whale Gun which can be loaded even without a mag) and you have to get a new one (either from the respective trader or by finding one in the wild - which is rare).
Can you please explain how to reload for me? I restarted the game and the exact same thing happened.

Eject-> wait for mag loading(only necessary if no loaded spares are available, check the bottom of your HUD)-> insert (same as quick reload key)-> caulk (if the chamber was empty, ie reloading from a fully dry gun)-> the weapon is ready, resume firing

Keep in mind this is the procedure with ALL gun controls enabled. If you're on one of the other reloading options, I can't help you, I've never tried them.

X - Place spent/empty mag in your inventory

then

R - Reload this way simply means placing a magaze from your backpack, if there's ammo for it then it will be full.

C/M2 - ♥♥♥♥ gun if chamber was empty. C is best when on the move, m2 is when you are in the middle of shooting.

I switched to the All gun controls and attempted to follow this procedure. Now I can see that I have three additional magazines (area 1-1) for the pistol, and after pressing X I saw one of them reload itself.

My new problem is that pressing R does not insert any of the magazines into the gun. Instead R discharges the round in the chamber. With the carbine equipped pressing R reloads a round into the gun as it should.I have not altered the keybindings, R is still listed as reload.
The Carbrine and some guns do not have magazines. The bullets are stored in the weapon itself (such as the revolver or magnun) or it only can stare the weapon in the chamber.

What I do not understand is how to insert a magazine into a gun that dose have one. The game tutorial, the controller input screen, and the helpful commenter above all say that pressing R should place a magazine into a gun that doesn't have one. However, in my cases, pressing R does not do that, and I'm now trying to understand why.

What R does do in this situation is discharge the round remaining in the chamber, or after that it sounds like it's pulling the trigger.

*Edit to add clarity* The status of the gun is that I have pressed X to unload the magazine, the magazine has refilled itself or there is an alternative magazine available, and pressing R (the key that is marked "reload") causes the final round in the chamber of the gun to discharge. Pressing R again does not cause a new magazine to be loaded into the gun.

That is weird... for me, in that exact same state, R just inserts a new magazine. Though you also said that you ejected the chambered round with R, which is also weird - for me, R only ever inserts a new round. If I press R with a round chambered, it inserts the new mag while keeping the chambered round. This is with the "Unload, Load & ♥♥♥♥" control setting as well as all the others. To eject a round, I have to either press the dedicated "♥♥♥♥" button or the aim button (assuming the aim = ♥♥♥♥ setting is on).
The only other thing I can think of is if the input is somehow misread entirely (explaining why it ejected a round from the chamber). Did you ever change the default key config? Maybe there's a double bind? Are any other input devices or gamepads connected?
I think what may have happened is that switching reload styles while your gun was unloaded and needed the action pulled back may have bugged the gun's reload. I might recommend finding a new copy and not changing your reload styles around for a gun that has the mag ejected/needs the action pulled back.
You can also try dropping the gun and picking it back up.
